Demon's Score is a bland rhythm game that is severely overpriced.
The Bad: Uninteresting story, awful voice acting, shallow gameplay, only a few levels, really expensive
When I picked up Demon's Score I didn't expect a rhythm game, but coming from Square Enix I expected high production values and interesting character designs, I was partially right. Demon's Score's story is very uninteresting with a girl trying to save her father from evil, yeah pretty typical. While the rhythm gameplay is decent, everything else is below average.
The rhythm gameplay evolves around you tapping circles when arrows line up, pretty basic and not very interesting or challenging. Some times you have to follow a moving circle with your finger, some times you have to slide your finger and tap really fast. That's really all there is, there is no depth to the gameplay at all which is really disappointing. Each level plays out exactly the same, fight through small enemies, beat a mini-boss, fight through a door, than fight the boss. The game tries to incorporate mythical demons into the game and giving them unique personalities but it's really lame. Belial is a jive black guy who's into disco, Asmodeus is a metal freak, and various others range from a Spaniard and even a Samurai. Nothing special at all and the voice acting is ear-splitting. The stupid teddy bear that is your partner is the worst, he sounds like you just want to strangle him.
Once you beat a boss you get a unique costume, but honestly the game isn't that challenging even on hard. There are only a few stages and one weird thing happened, once I unlocked my 5th costume the game progress reset back to the first level. I had no idea what happened because I hadn't reached the end. There's not much else to this game, there is just so much that is wrong and not right here. The game's cut scenes are told in stills with a filter over them, very lazy and uninteresting. Here's the biggest deal breaker, the game is a whopping $20. The first song is free and each song is $4. The Android version requires you to pay for all the songs at once in a $20 pack. This game isn't even worth 99 cents let alone $20. I can buy 20 really high quality $1 games instead and have plenty of fun. This game can be beaten about an hour and you won't find any reason to come back.
As it stands Demon's Score had some potential with the sexy protagonist and the outfits look really nice. The game does use the Tegra chipset on Android tablets making the Unreal Engine look great, but everything else ruins that experience. The voice acting is terrible, the story is bland, and the gameplay is shallow and uninteresting.
