Good for a multiplayer game, but not too fun if you play it alone

User Rating: 5 | Defend Your Castle WII
Pros: Cheap. Easy to pick up and play. Fun multiplayer. Addictive.

Contras: Graphics suck. There isn't much sound. Gets repetitive. Later levels last a lot.

I wasn't expecting much from Defend Your Castle when I got it. It's just a game about grabbing and throwing people who are trying to attack your castle. To throw them, you use the a+b buttons to grab them and shake the wiimote to throw them. Once you throw them they fall, and once they fall, they can either die or survive. To make them die you have to throw them from a high altitude. Your castle has a health bar, so you don't want them to attack it because if it dies you have to restart the level.

At first, the guys will just attack you with their bare hands. Then they get sticks. And then new enemies come, but not too many, only two types more.

Every level is counted as a day, and it ends when the sun goes away. The length of every level keeps getting higher the more you progress in the game.

The game obviously keeps getting harder and harder with each level that passes, but you also get some upgrades to make it a little easier for you.

First we have archers, which basically just shoot every once in a while and help you kill some enemies. Not too useful at first, but the more you have, the more they work. Then we got some guys who help you rebuild your tower a little, very useful if you don't like spending all your points in rebuilding it yourself. Then we got some guys who just basically explode. They are useful to kill large amounts of enemies, but they die when you use them. Last but not least, we got wizards. They have three different spells. There's eraser which erases one enemy, a bomb which just works like the bomb guys and a spray that turns enemies on your side.

Those 4 types of allies are represented with towers. To make them stronger you have to add some people to the tower you want to upgrade. To add people you got something called the pit of conversion. It helps you convert enemies on your side. It works the same as the wizards' spray. Once enemies are on your side, you can put them in a tower to help you.

Graphics: The graphics aren't too good. Everything looks like made or paper or other home material. I think it suits the game, but that doesn't mean they're good. As a matter of fact, they're terrible. There are some different weathers too, they don't add much to the game, but it's nice to have them for some variety. When a day starts, the field looks sunny and when it ends, it's dark.

Difficulty: The game has two different difficulty levels, normal and heroic. I played the game in heroic because I usually play the games in their hardest difficulties, even when it takes me more to beat them, and I can tell you the game gets really hard. But you can always grind to beat a level. Or you can use an easy cheat, which is leaving the game in pause. While the game's in pause, the day keeps transcurring, which may be a programming error, which makes it very easy to beat levels.

Addiction: The game is addictive at times, but it eventually gets boring. The same happens with the multiplayer, even though it's very solid.

Gameplay: The gameplay is very easy for anyone to understand, but it gets your arm tired of moving it so much.

Replay Value: There's infinite replay value in this game. There are infinite levels, so if you wanna keep playing and playing the game, it'll never end. For me, that's not something good, but if you really like the game a lot, it's great.

Variety: There's not much variety in this game, aside from different climates and just 4 types of enemies. I think the developers could have done it way better, even when it's a cheap game, a little more enemy types wouldn't hurt at all.

Music/Sound: The sound is almost non-existent. There are some sound effects and some sort of music in the menu screen, but it's lame and there's no music while you play the levels. I'm not sure on what the developers were thinking.

Story: The game doesn't have any kind of story. Not like it needs it, but it definitely would've been nice.

Multiplayer: The multiplayer is pretty solid, because 4 different players can play at a time. In the first levels it might be boring, but later in the game. It's really fun, even though it does get repetitive after some time.

In conclusion, this game is good if you don't have much money, but it's not one of the best wiiware games out for one player. As a multiplayer game it's pretty fun, but if you wanna play it alone, I think there is some better stuff in the wii shop for the same prize.
