Something else for a change...

User Rating: 7.8 | Deer Hunter 2005 PC
Deerhunter 2005 isn't a game for just anyone. I totally can imagine why people wouldn't like this game. However, if you give it a try you might think of it as a really fun FPS with a different flavour to it than most of the other shooters. It isn't hard to get the hang of the game as it plays like any good FPS. Your inventory is placed under the scroll button for rapid access. Left button is fire, right button is toggle aim down your sight.

The goal of the game doesn't require a lot of brainpower to figure out either. You can setup a custom hunter and there are certain skills to choose from. They all have a different influence on how you move through your environment. Other than that, just shoot deer - two bucks and one doe. The doe is just for fun, the bucks really count and win you trophies allowing you to divide more skill points to your hunter.
You may shoot a fawn for a doe but you're not able to bag it. The ones you can bag show up in your showcase as an accurate 3D model including the point of impact of your bullet(s) - although sometimes this is a little off, this still is a cool feature.

Weapons are customizable, you can choose from different skins, ammo, reticles and set the calibration for your gun. Bows can be customized in the same way.

The difficulty of the game is really fair even on the hardest level. You can choose from three settings: easy, normal and hard. Not only does this affect the way the deer react but also how big the bucks are roaming the map. We are talking antlers here... The best and biggest bucks only show themselves on the high level.

Now, sometimes you'll need a little patience and often I felt stupid playing a game like this. Sitting on a tripod making deer sounds, doesn't sound really spectacular, but shooting a record buck with a single shot (which triggers a nice bullet cam) feels really rewarding.
A nice thing is you are able to record your hunting’s and to a limited extend edit them. This way you can relive your actions from different angles and in slow motion.

The graphics look all right. The game runs on the aspen engine and has nice some physics in it. The deer look good and move realistic. Dead carcases drop really cool like a dead weight dangling through the air. There isn’t a whole lot of sound in the game. Apart from the main tune there are only ambient sounds and gun shots. Deerhunter 2005 certainly isn't a game which a lot of people will like, but I find it relieving to see some developers are at least trying something out of the ordinary.
