DOA Volleyball is a decent game with very little to it.

User Rating: 6.5 | Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball XBOX
There are two modes of play an exhibition mode and a single player mode. The single player mode is a story that you’re on vacation and there’s nothing else to it. You can play volleyball, rest, gamble, or play a jumping game to get money to buy items and swimsuits. The Volleyball game is pretty simple and is just a lesson in timing really. It plays well but just lacks real depth. The gambling card games all play fine and accomplish what there going for. The jumping game is just a test on being able to press the A button hard and softly. Trying to get a partner and buying them gifts are hit and miss and is really just annoying. Basically it plays well, there’s nothing to it, and they need to make it easier to get a partner.

Obviously, the games strong point is intended to be it’s graphical prowess, and by now everybody should know that all DOA games since DOA 3 look exactly like DOA and that what this game looks like. Yes it looks nice and this is only the first game to just use the accomplishments of the DOA 3 engine and nothing else but an upgrade to something would be nice. In any event things look nice and there is nothing worth complaining about short of a little aliasing here and there.

There are plenty of songs featured in the soundtrack that fit the theme of the game, though I could stand to listen to any of them, but there is the custom soundtrack option that saves lives in these situations. Any other sound effects and speaking in the game is passable. One of the big issues with the game is that you are not looking at much playing time here at all. With the two initial modes and the single player being incredibly short the only reason to keep playing and playing is to collect all the items, clothing, and accessories in the game. Now there are literally a ton of them, I can’t imagine anyone being brain dead enough to want to collect them all. Unless you’re an extremely horny young boy who has now access to anything moderately erotic and is desperate for a little soft core pornography and in that circumstance how such a person would end up with this game as the sole exception of accessible erotic material would be very unlikely.

Overall, you looking at a shallow Volleyball game with a couple of extras that aren’t going to keep you interested in the game much longer then the actual Volleyball game will. Maybe if you in the market for a Volleyball game and obviously aren’t looking for a simulation you may consider it especially if you’re a big DOA fan but you might want to check out either of the Outlaw Volleyball games before making the purchase because it’s fun but not for very long. One of the most surprising things about this game is that Jeff Worstmann actually wrote a decent review with a realistic score for it.

Despite Gamespot’s new lazy and stupid method of scoring games here’s how the game would have ranked on the old better system:

Gameplay: 6
Graphics: 8
Sound: 7
Value: 5
Tilt: 6
Overall: 6.4
