A few trivial flaws, but DOA5 still manages to be the best fighter this generation. Not many will realize it.

Fans have waited 7 years for Team Ninja's follow-up to "Dead or Alive 4" aka the fighter that set the gold standard for future 3D fighters, and finally we can rejoice in a piece that can be called nothing else but a real work of art.

The most significant change to DOA is the addition of several gameplay mechanics. With a bit of practice you will tear up with joy as you perform 12-hit combos with your favorite fighter largely thanks to a new critical burst system that prolongs combos and is unholdable.

DOA5's colorful cast of characters really makes the game stand out from other fighters, you have Kasumi the runaway ninja, Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Gaiden; classic favorites such as Lei Fang and Zack and special guest characters from Virtua Fighter. The whole cast is basically here with just a couple exclusions (Leon, Ein, Tengu).

Two characters join the fight: Rig, an insane kicker inspired by none other than Sarah Bryant, and Mila -- a crazy MMA fighter with lots of ground mounts and fast strikes.

These characters not only add fresh diversity, but are both equally fun to play as and have learning curves of their own. Characters sweat and get dirty depending on each level, and this is where DOA becomes simply smarter than other fighters -- environments.

Every stage you fight on is a character in its own right. An icy setting will leave you tripping, and turns stuns into critical stuns. There are also impressive multi-tiered stages that change gameplay and add serious damage to your opponent. None of the effects ever come off as cheap, and there is always a way to get out of danger if you're a smart player.

Cliff hangers are another new mechanic introduced in DOA5. When you find yourself hanging off a cliff you have the option to defend yourself as your opponent charges you. If your defense fails, you will be pounded by a beautiful throw or strike to the bottom.

Another new mechanic; powerblows can also be used to dominate an opponent. Powerblows can be charged to their maximum after losing your health. If you manage to connect you will dazzle the screen with a flurry of beauty.

Overall, DOA5 does have a few flaws, but they aren't noticeable in comparison to all the good this game has. I recommend it for any fan of the fighting genre.
