This isn't the only mod with its own page. Red Orchestra being another mod.
I beleive it depends if the mod has the backing of a publisher etc. Plus Day Z is hugely popular right now so it makes sense for Gamespot to list it. Furthermore Gamespot will be doing coverage of Day Z soon and would need a hub to do it from
Mods with a 700,000 strong player base which is growing daily get their own forum, yes.

this mod is more deserving to be on this site than any other of the top 10 games right now. Have u seen the most sold game on steam lately? and its ONLY because of this mod.

DotA never got its own forum so I don't think the "popularity" argument holds.

more people play dayz than dota, a lot more, and dayz has shown exponential growth since late 2011
got any statistics to back up that claim?more people play dayz than dota, a lot more, and dayz has shown exponential growth since late 2011

But that's not true. Check steam statistics page. Dota2 is the second most played game. That's without counting all the millions that played DotA in Warcraft3 before dota2, hon and lol were released.

Check it by yourself.
This game busted a quicky. It blew up quick and its already dead.
Server lists are going down. Population is going down. I guess everyone figured out how to survive and got tired of all their deaths coming from bugs. I guess it was fun for the first month and we could overlook all the bugs, clunky engine, and even a 500ms+ lag feeling while pinging 25ms. After a while, the game has nothing left. Theres nothing to do in the game once you master survival other than try to find other players only to engage in the worst FPS experience of any game... might as well play another FPS if you want that. What else is there to do?? Wait around until your next bugged out death or see how many times you can log in and out before you load up naked with no backup or weapons?
great potential.. i'll wait for a clone that can maybe execute it better.

Anything that is - or was - popular enough gets it own webpage - even if it is not a game.

It is now...
@tenz01
Oh come on you can't be serious. They just broke 1 million unique players with that number growing by the thousands DAILY! In July alone the game has gained over 500,000 unique players. I don't normally call someone ignorant, but man it's hard not to here. Not only is the unique player count going up, so is the number of players who log in daily. You may have had a bad experience or this just isn't the game for you. If you had an imagination you could do just about anything in this game. Have you ever tried rescuing people in need? What about forming a group and establishing a base? Maybe form a community? The one problem with this mod is people with your mindset. No one wants to think outside the box. Most are stuck in this get loot then kill people mentality. This game could be so much more. Everyone expects the game to hold your hand and tell you what to do. You are free to do anything, and you won't be successful unless you try.
