They're on to something but it is a rough start

The change to a top-down, twin-stick dungeon crawler certainly suits the series very well. I honestly would not mind seeing more of this in the future. However, this change is the only highlight in what is a very basic, very flawed game.

The gameplay relies on awkward controls that make it annoying to switch between characters and remember how to use the various abilities you can acquire in the game. The heavy emphasis on grinding out souls (via destroying enemies) and running the course of the maps to find boatman coins in order to acquire simple upgrades gets repetitive quickly. And the fixed camera can make it awkward to navigate and platform through certain areas. On top of all this, we are treated to a very basic story that, in a nutshell, simply has us go through map after map to acquire an item or defeat a boss that isn't much of a challenge.

I certainly wanted to like this a lot more but it was too flawed to enjoy. It was too repetitive for its own good and that can very much play a big factor in how long you'll want to play this too. Should they continue this style, and I hope they do, focus on a single character. Add a level-up system and loot. Pretty much take what Torchlight did and put a Darksiders skin on it and you'll be good to go.
