Great game hampered by bugs

User Rating: 8 | Cyberpunk 2077 PC

Please keep in mind, I ran the game on an Xbox One X (not to be confused with the Series X). Even with the processing power of the One X, I still experienced some freezing and a few crashes. It took me 56 hours to complete the game and I experienced 5 crashes during that time, 1 of which occurred after all the recent patches. I didn't experience many of the glitches and bugs that I've read about, but there were a few which significantly hampered gameplay.

The first thing to point out is that this is not the game that was promised. In all honesty, the level of disappointment with the game was very similar to what I felt with Fable back in the day. Like Peter Molyneux, the folks at CD Projekt Red seem to have talked about the game too early in its development and never really clarified that some of the features they wanted to include weren't going to be available in the end product.

That being said, the game which was delivered is actually a pretty enjoyable experience (at least if you have a powerful system on which to play it). The story, the graphics, and the voice acting are all top notch. I'm not going to go into a lot of detail about the story itself because it really should be experienced without spoilers. It is engrossing and has some really great twists and turns.

One of the best decisions the development team made was to have the viewpoint be locked in first person. While I normally like to see my character, the first person view really made everything feel more real. There were a few points in the story which had a far greater impact than they would have if I were playing the game the way I normally would. This level of emersion was aided by great graphics and excellent voice acting. Not only do the actors who voice the main characters do an excellent job, but the ones who voice even minor side characters put a lot of work into their performances.

One thing I think bears special mention is the lack of emphasis on your character's backstory. When it was announced, CD Project Red promised a long series of missions which would allow you to create your character's backstory and this was supposed to have a major impact on the game. As released, there is only a short mission based on your choice of backstory, then the only impact on the game is a few dialogue options which don't really impact the outcome of any situation. I didn't find this as annoying as a lot of people seem to. I realize branching dialogue trees with important choices can enhance gameplay. The various dialogue choices offered by choice of background (and occasionally as a result of skills and abilities) does help with the role-playing aspect of the game. No, choosing the "Corpo" option in dialogue doesn't provide a significantly better outcome. It does, however, allow me to play the character in a way that feels right for the character I created,

Finally, I do have to mention the bugs. There were several missions I couldn't complete because NPCs or objects simply weren't where they were supposed to be. This normally only occurred with Side Jobs and Gigs, all of which I could just walk away from. It did, however happen during the endgame. I had to talk to one specific NPC and he never showed up where he was supposed to be. Reloading from my last safe solved the problem, but it meant walking through a number of conversations a second time.
