Cthulu RPG? Strangly Good

User Rating: 9 | Cthulhu Saves the World IOS

While reading this review, keep in mind that this is a $1 Xbox indie game. Cthulu Save the World is not only an ode to old-school JRPGs but also a satire of it. The story is quite simple in its concept, Cthulu's Alucard-esqe loss of bad assery and his quest to recapture his mind shattering qualities. The dialogue is one of the main motivations to keep playing, besides the intrinsically addicting nature of JRPGs. The lack of voice acting does not detract from the hilarity of the conversations in any way. Many references to Lovecraft and RPG cliches rounds out the dialogue into a big ball of fun. If you have ever played the original Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest/Warrior, then the combat is fairly boiler plate. Interestingly, the small tweaks to the ancient combat system alleviate the frustration often associated with such games. Small things such as the ability to save anywhere, lack of post battle health management, branching level ups, and less random encounters are extremely beneficial to the overall experience and should be commonplace among modern turn based RPGs. The campaign ends relatively quickly for this type of game (with a lot of dilly dallying I finished in 6 hours). There are small extras like a bestiary, dev commentary, and additional difficulty settings ,but these are afterthoughts more than anything. I would whole heartedly recommend this to anyone with a love for Lovecraft's novels or in need of a JRPG on the cheap.
