A brutal Tower-Defense game that really grows on you.

User Rating: 7.5 | Crystal Defenders X360
Final Fantasy Crystal Defenders puts you in command of a small squad of troops attempting to hold off a legion of monstrous invaders. Using a combination of magic, archery, and warriors, you'll have to stifle wave after wave of antagonists intent on making off with your crystals.

FFCD is a single player game, and effectively puts you through 3 levels of challenge, rankings W-1, W-2, and finally W-3. The learning curve is somewhat easy to take in, although the game features a rather punishing level of difficulty which novice players may get discouraged playing against. The game rewards actual strategy though, and really forces a commander or general to be very calculating with where his troops are placed. In this respect, the game is very gratifying as defeating the enemy waves is much more than a matter of simply slapping down additional defenders.

The game features a very simple graphical palette, although it does communicate the information it needs to well. There can be a lot happening on the screen, and this information is never really hidden or inaccessible. The familiar look and feel of the Final Fantasy series is here, particularly if you've played Final Fantasy Tactics.

The sounds are unremarkable; enemies explode in a small puff of smoke, money dings, and all of your minions attack with the same noises repeatedly. The music is somewhat inspiring, although after 30 waves of it you may be ready to turn the sound down or off… all in all, I'd say the audio is a little subpar for a Square-Enix game, which is surprising.

This game is getting some fairly rough reviews, but I have a sneaky suspicion that its brutal difficulty curve is to blame for most of it… it is extremely challenging. If you like your strategy on the tougher side of the spectrum, there is a surprisingly tough little game to be had here. If you prefer to be a bit more laid back as an armchair general, I'd give it a wide berth.
