What's wrong with you, Gamespot? This is one of the best racing series EVER. And this is the best in series.
I remember seeing this at my favorite pizza place and I had to own it. Cruisn’ Exotica is the third in Midway's arcade style racing series. This time around, there are over 15 exotic courses (hence the name) ranging from Atlantis to Mars to Prehistoric. There are also tons of cars: you start out with 12 but you can work your way up to a whopping 28. 3 modes of gameplay are available in this game: Challenge where you can change the racing rules, Freestyle where you just pick a course and go, and Exotica, where you play all the courses in a row. The game play is very fun and simple: just race like you would in Mario Kart. You can also perform tricks, both off ramps and other drivers, and find shortcuts. The difficulty is also challenging without being frustrating: a balance difficult to obtain. The reason it is this way is because there are lots of challenging races but all you have to do to unlock new cars is finish the races. And because there are lots of cars and courses, as well as a great multiplayer, this game has practicality limitless replay value.
This series is not well known for its graphics, but don’t believe people when they say the graphics absolutely suck. The courses are well detailed, and while the cars appear blocky at first, they are actually quite well detailed, even enough for my friend to identify the make and model of each car.
The sound is also excellent. You can change the music during the race, which makes it feel even more like an international road trip, which is what Midway wants you to feel. The sound effects are adequate, but still great.
So, DON’T BELIEVE ANYONE THAT SAYS THIS GAME IS LOUSY. This is a great game and one of the best racers and this just adds to the collection of amazing N64 games. No N64 owner should pass this rare gem up.
