For a handheld game on a console, this is pretty good.

User Rating: 7 | Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion PS5

  • Emotional story with very memorable characters.
  • Plenty of fanservice for those that love "Final Fantasy VII."
  • Visual upgrade is breathtaking, as you would expect.
  • Music is pretty damn memorable, much like many "Final Fantasy" games.
  • Gameplay feels smooth and is translated solidly to a console.
  • Plenty of missions and content to offer replayability.
  • Good quality-of-life upgrades to make things better than before.

  • Combat gets a bit stale at points.
  • Environments can err a bit on the repetitive side.
  • Though better than most on this front, there are moments where the "this was previously a handheld game" feel shows in the finished product.

Consensus: The sheer fact that "Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion" exists at all should spell good news for hardcore fans. Having this alongside the planned "Final Fantasy VII Remake" trilogy is going to be a nice addition, and it's great to see Square Enix acknowledge it. As for the game itself, it's not perfect, but for what is essentially a handheld game being translated to a console, this is pretty solid. There are definitely moments where the bite-sized and experimental nature of the handheld version creeps in and takes me out just a little bit, but it doesn't take away from the fact that this is a solid game and a well-crafted re-creation. If you're a huge "Final Fantasy VII" fan, this re-release comes highly recommended. For me, this was good for holding myself over while waiting for "Final Fantasy VII Rebirth," which will hopefully be out later this year.
