Although decent for its time, it can (and should) be skipped in favour of other cricket based games.

One of the most important (and perhaps the sole reason) for which I chose to play this game was my love for cricket. Scouting around for a Cricket game, this was the one I could get because it was suppossedly well known. Although it manages to satisfy a Cricket fan's love for the game (provided you aren't used to playing Cricket games in the past), it does suffer from some rather serious drawbacks and leaves plenty of scope for improvement.

The gameplay is something that no Cricket fan need be told of. There are one-day and test matches as also first class matches. All teams (and players) in the game are apparently licensed which is good. The graphics are good though sometimes you see things like the batsman's bat swinging long enough to pass through his face which destroys the illusion of reality. Also, the game's system of allowing the marker to be visible till the time the ball is bowled makes batting rather easy on the lower difficulty levels. There's not much in terms of sound and although the commentary is good and clear, it does tend to get repetitive soon enough. You'll however hear some occasional banter about cricket's history which makes for some interesting hearing. Also, getting the game to run is not a problem at all given the modest system requirements (it should even run on systems with Intel's onboard graphics chipsets).

The AI though is something which is occassionally flawed and is one of the weaker points of the game; it gets so tough that at times you'll feel that every batsman in the opposition has the characteristics of Sachin Tendulkar making bowling all the moer difficult. At the end, Cricket 2004 is a fairly good game which can be played for sometime until a newer cricket game becomes availaible. And now that there are so many out there, this one can almost certainly be skipped.
