Control: AWE isn't so much a continuation of the Control story, but rather the linking between this game and Alan Wake

User Rating: 8 | Control: AWE PS4

This is the most recent and final Control DLC that I'm aware of. It takes place in a brand new sector of the Oldest House, and ties into the mysterious ending of Remedy's past game, Alan Wake.

This DLC isn't quite as story based as The Foundation, or the main game. It doesn't answer any questions, nor does it expand on the rest of Controls story, and I understand any fans being disappointed in that. BUT what it does do is link Alan Wake to the world of Control, at least more than the main game, which had a couple research collectables that linked the game towards the end.

If you've never played Alan Wake, then you'll definitely be confused as hell. And it's a shame Alan Wake isn't available on the PS4 for fans of Control to enjoy. Hopefully in the future, as AWE definitely hints at an Alan Wake sequel, which I'm beyond excited about. Alans place in this DLC is brief, and aside from the main villian being the same as in Alan Wake, it's just a bunch of various collectables that really links the two games. While it may seem underwhelming, I quite enjoyed it. I thought the connection was very well done.

AWE has all the charm of Control and The foundation. It's still funny, interesting, and creepy.. especially creepy. I'd say that this is the most unsettling and freaky entry in the game so far. The use of pitch black darkness and needing light to survive has been great in Alan Wake, and to see it in this game with the updated current gen graphics has enhanced it quite a bit. There's no new enemies, aside from the main enemy, which is terrifying to say the least. Jesse is still as great as ever, however there's no real NPC's that you interact with, aside from Langston, who's also funny as hell in this DLC.

While we're on the topic of the disappointing aspect of the game, the side missions were very underwhelming. Most were some of those fetch quests that Ahti gives you (again, it's a bummer he's not included in this DLC,) and the rest were either super short, or super tedious. When you compare them to the side missions in the main game as well as The Foundation, it's a pretty big disappointment.

Gameplay is pretty much the same, with no new abilities or enemies. The combat's still fun, but again, compared to The Foundation it's a bummer there's not a lot of new and refreshing things in this DLC.

All in all AWE is a fine DLC, especially if you're a fan of Alan Wake. If you love the gameplay of the main game, then it'll at least be fun for you. While I really enjoyed the link with Alan Wake, I thought all things considered it's not as great as the rest of Control.
