The best of the colony wars series, endless fun and the ace ability of arming up your own ship.

User Rating: 9.6 | Colony Wars III: Red Sun PS
Looking at the Colony Wars series, I think that Red Sun is the best of them all because it opens up all new aspects to the space flying sim. I has the addition of you chosing what weapons are onboard your ship and what your actual ship is. The story is much different to the other two where you do not play as one of the Navy or the League but you play some mercinary/ ultra mind lost hero who keeps having visions of a man named the General who is an Engram Link (hologram) and wants you to save the universe or universes (not sure which) from the oncoming nightmare of the Red Sun (title of game!) which evoles over the period of the story and soon becomes a mega death bringer to all of man. To start off with the option of customizing your ship's weaponry is unique in the fact you can choose whether the ship has a BDS 900 (Unlocked later in the game) which is practically a nuclear weapon in outer space or just a weedy set of Hull lasers and a couple of flares. This meaning that there are all sorts of ways to complete mission objectives, you can even ram into ships if you want and if you do it enough times they will go up in a ball of flame! The option of also changing your ship comes in handy too as when you start you get some crappy little ship which can be terminated within an instant. But when you get to the bigger ships you can upgrade so you have a ship with high strength, speed or shields. There is one ship that is the most powerful which you can unlock when you reach a certain rank. Talking about the rank system: The rank system shows how many kills you have made and it is set out like an actual date ie. 00/00/00. The first number is the number of fighters destroyed, second number indicates the number of midships destroyed and the final number shows the number of fleetships eliminated. As you go up ranks you unlock better weapons. The game offers a unique concept of taking a fleetship apart piece by piece in the fact that you can knock of all the turrets before you take out the ship. Like the Vengance game but not key components. The good thing is that as the enimies have gotten much harder, you have the ability to regenerate your shields but not your hull. Finally, the game offers a very clever story where you do not have to complete all the missions, only those with the engram link, the others provide you more money for better upgrades. In all, one of the best flying sims and is an ace shot-em-up.
