This is the first game in Konami's long running Castlevania series. It's best described as being an action-platformer hybrid, with a horror movie environment and challenging difficulty.

This game has the player controlling Simon Belmont (otherwise known as Simon Belmondo), a vampire hunter and member of a clan of vampire hunters with the ability to wield a special whip- the only weapon capable of defeating Count Dracula. Simon embarks on a journey to Castlevania - Dracula's castle, in order to slay the vampire and end his reign of terror. Throughout this journey the player will encounter several famous horror-movie monsters, including Medusa, the Frakenstein Monster, Death, and of course, Dracula himself. This creates a very interesting, original, and memorable gaming experience.

Castlevania's gameplay is quite difficult yet remarkably enjoyable. Simon will adventure through fairly linear areas fighting the minions of Dracula, as well as having to navigate Castlevania's dangerous territory. Some of the smaller enemies in this game are the most difficult. They can be tricky to hit, and are capable of inflicting quite a bit of pain upon the player- near the end of the game, the player dies in only four hits.

However, Simon will have plenty of ways to defend himself. He has access to his trademark whip at all times, though the player can find items to upgrade it's range and power, as well as one other item at a time. Boomerangs, Throwing Knives, and a variety of other weapons (including the very important holy water) will be available to the player, and the player will need to use these to their full potential to survive some of the more difficult section of the game. Players will be challenged to discover how to use what's available to them in order to eventually defeat Dracula.

The game's largest flaw is it's length. The game features only six different levels, and none of them are particularly long. However, upon completion of the game, the player will have the option to replay the game at a greater difficulty.

Castlevania is a challenging, enjoyable, and very memorable game that will challenge even the most experienced of gamers, and at only 500 wii points ($5), there is no reason to pass it up.
