Average content for a great game.

User Rating: 7 | Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Reverie PS3
After going through both Downloadable Content packages for Castlevania Lords of Shadow and getting 100% trophies/achievements in the game, I turned to write a review for each DLC having played both packages twice. I waited some time to do so since I had not played many DLCs at the time of their release, but after having played through the Assassin's Creed II and Brotherhood packages and the Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare DLC I think I got a good idea of what a DLC should be.

I will start off by saying that Castlevania LOS is my favorite game ever, but in fairness I can admit that the DLCs released for the game are not good. Each package is priced at $10 each, whereas I think it should have been $10 for both considering the extra content it really added and the play time it extended the game for. Reverie is the better of the two, however, but I would strongly suggest against them unless you are a die-hard fan of the series... even then you might feel cheated when you put together price/content/play time.

Reverie centers around the aftermath of Gabriel Belmont defeating all 3 Lords of Shadow and his subsequent successful fight against Satan. Laura, who had survived and had spared Gabriel's life in the main story of the game, asks him to return to the castle to try and stop an impending evil that had been imprisoned by the Lords of Shadow and was now trying to escape since their defeat. Gabriel returns to the castle and the adventure continues.

PRESENTATION: Good. The story is shown in palettes of anime style sequences and marks it difference from the main game this way. Laura acts somewhat of a narrator this time and controls most of the screen time audio wise compared to Gabriel. She explains most of the history behind the Lords of Shadow as humans, and some of the puzzles which appear.

GRAPHICS: Excellent. The graphics in the game itself are great and they prevail in this DLC as well. The environments are similar in context but express the continuity of being in different parts of the castle and make you feel like you are just in areas you had not explored before.

SOUND: Great. More of the same prevails here as well as the voice acting is really good and hearing Laura's voice most of the time does not dull the experience or become a nuisance at certain points like in other games with a forced female companion ( most notably Ashley & Sheva from Resident Evil 4 & 5, respectively ). Special effects are crisp as in the main game as well, and the musical score continues to be a great part of the game and used well in each area and you can clearly differ the fighting sections from the more puzzle based ones.

GAMEPLAY: Average. Speaking of puzzles, this is main content of this DLC and falls rather stale compared to the excellent ones they had in the main game. The fighting here also exists but you don't really encounter anything big or worth dying over much...although playing as Laura was refreshing to be able to do. Like most second tier characters in any franchise she is weak in stamina but rather vicious at keeping herself alive. When you are poor of health you can attack a ghoul and drain him for his blood to enhance your own. Although you only really use her in one section it would have extended the game farther if you could have been able to use her more or to add some special power.

LEVEL DESIGN: Good. Even in short form the areas to be explored here are decent. The main course you are taking on is trying to reach the very top of the castle, and they somewhat achieved that goal. The thing that draws back a bit is the direction of making the DLC puzzle driven, yet the puzzles do not help you traverse the castle vertically whatsoever ( making one staircase appear does not count ). Sometimes you get the overall sensation of it being just a level that wasn't completed enough for the main game and they decided to make a DLC out of it.

BEASTIARY: Very poor. Being a puzzle driven DLC there are less than a handful of enemies to battle with and they do not offer much resistance.

DIFFICULTY: Moderate. Aside from the toy puzzle and the platforming section the DLC is pretty straightforward and only when playing as Laura on Very Hard ( Paladin ) is the real threat of dying a factor.

LASTING APPEAL: Bad. I have a hard time thinking of something that would make anyone want to revisit this part of the story aside from the trophies or achievements. I have replayed different parts of the main game several times but have no real interest to invest time in a short puzzle based DLC with no real high notes or let-me-do-that-again moments.

I rate it a 7.2 out of 10.0
