SON was one of the best games I have ever played. Good. I said it. Now back to the fact that this is a different game. It is a trend in the industry to take 2D classics and turn them into 3D incarnations. Frequently, this fails like the Hindenberg Blimp, but as with games such as Metroid Prime it can succeed if enough time and effort is exerted. What elements make a good Castlevania game you might ask? Here is a breakdown and analysis:

Music: Lament of Innocence has wonderful compositions that give it an atmosphere appropriate to its content

Combat: With combo and whip upgrades, you can fashion your character into a living weapon of destruction

Graphics: Top notch

Secrets: If you make the effort, you will be rewarded appropriately

Gameply: Solid

So, looking at these elements, one could say that this is a good game. "But wait" says the obese troglodite from the corner of his Hello Kitty themed room. "This isn't Symphony of the Night! (fat blubbering noises follow)" Oh **** someone forgot to read the title of my review! I have been playing Castlevania since its first NES incarnation, and the thing that makes the series fun is that EACH GAME IS A BIT DIFFERENT!!! I imagine that if Konami just kept releasing SON each year with no changes, that would make everyone happy. Unfortunately, those bastards are attempting to keep the series going. Sure, LOI is not the best game ever. OK. Its still not the abomination that Fatal Frame III is in terms of sequels. Overall, I think that the game is fun to play, and I hope that gamers at least give it a chance.
