An interesting twist... now your a Devil Forgemaster!

User Rating: 8.1 | Castlevania: Curse of Darkness XBOX
The second try at a Castlevania game on the PS2 console is slightly better than previous games but is still lacking in some areas. The countless treks through the same areas can get boring but its not too horrible, plus your not alone. Let me explain.

The story goes like this: You play as the Devil Forgemaster Hector who is out to avenge the death of his lover Rosaly. Right in the beginning you meet Issac, who is also a Forgemaster, and Rosaly's killer. Now you have to go through many different areas starting with the Abandoned Castle in order to find and kill Issac. Along the way you fight countless enemies that will drop items and hearts. The bonus here is that you will also be able to create Innocent Devils (ID's) that can also level up with Hector and learn many different magics and abilities. These ID's come in handy against swarms of enemies and Bosses. They also have the abilities you need in order to progress in the game, such as Gliding to unreachable ledges, lifting heavy doors and sliding under walls and gates. You can get several types of ID's, there are: Fairy, Battle, Mage, Devil, Bird & Pumpkin. Plus you can create more than one kind with different abilities that can do different things as some areas are only available with certain abilities.

The battle system is great. You start with a small sword but you can create different and stronger weapons and armor for siginificant upgrades. Enemies drop these materials and you can also steal better materials from certain monsters. The stealing part of the game can be either fun or tedious depending on how much patience you have. I say this because you can only steal items when the monster is performing certain moves and this can be difficult with Bosses. Depending on which weapons you like to use (some are two handed and slow) there is a wide variety to choose from. The categories are: Swords, Axe, Spears, Knuckle & Special. The monsters dont have the greatest A.I. as they can run right by you at times or not even notice your around. But alot of them look really good and have devistating attacks. Some monsters are repeated but are at higher levels as you progress in the game which add's some difficulty depending on Hectors level as well.

There are a couple of option things you can do but unfortunately they dont have great rewards. First there is the "Chair Quest" where you can find and sit in a variety of different chairs and get their descriptions. But thats about all they do, no reward for finding all the chairs. Only fun part of this was sitting in Dracula's Throne during the final battle. Next there are the Two Towers with 50 floors each. The first tower has a small reward which enables you to add a second ID of the same type. Each floor has different enemies with a small break every 5 floors with a potion. Once your at the top you can Long Glide over to the second tower which is the hardest part of this whole game. There are many super hard level 75 enemies inside and I was at Level 64 and had to stop at the 36th floor because I was out of healing items and all my ID's were dead. Last is the optional Boss Legion and Nuclias. Legion isnt all that hard but Nuclias can be harder to beat than the last Boss of the game. Once again though, no rewards.

However there is a great replay value as after the game is completed and a new game is started you can play as Trevor Belmont with a special code.

Overall the game itself wasnt bad, it was actually fun to play but easy at times and monotinous. The areas are so large that when your running through some it feels like its taking forever. Fighting the enemies can be fun at times because you can lock-on and steal. The camera could really use some work though as some angles were bad and I would lose siht of some enemies. Long time fans of the series will be happy with the storyline and battles. Unless you gonna replay the Trevor or Crazy modes, I would rent it first.
