Castlevania Bloodlines is a classic Castlevania platformer but it wasn't released on the Nintendo consoles, it's the Sega Genesis version. But it's still done by Konami who just knew how to make really awesome games in the mid-90's. This review may be shorter than normal because I shouldn't have to describe the gameplay in detail. It's whip slashing, vampire killing fun, swinging from stuff, etc. We've all played many, many Castlevania games I hope. The gameplay is really solid, but not as good as the Super Nintendo games IMO. Both Dracula X, and Super Castlevania IV are quite a bit more appealing games in every aspect. However, Bloodlines does offer two different characters to choose from - an American guy with a whip, or a Spanish guy with a spear-type weapon. I like this option because it adds a huge amount of replay value. Other than that, this game tries to do it's best to imitate Super Castlevania IV, but just falls short of it. It even has some of the exact same music, and similar level designs. The whip has 5 directions at most, as opposed to the ideal 8 direction whip. It's also quite a bit shorter and easier than SC4 - just 6 levels in all. I was able to beat it in one day, and the bosses are not too challenging. There's different difficulty levels to choose from, so just pick the one that's right for you. That being said, I had a blast playing Bloodlines because I love the series in general. The funny thing is, this is definitely one of the best games available on the Sega Genesis. On SNES it probably wouldn't even make a top-100 list!
Pros: Good in-game music, solid controls, 2 different playable characters adds big time replay value.
Cons: Nothing new, kind of short, graphics and sound don't really stack up to the SNES games.
If you're a Castlevania fan like I am, you should check out this old-school Genesis cart for sure. If not, there are tons of better games in the series. This one is good compared to average games, and average compared to the other games in the series.
