No nonsense arcade Western shooter

User Rating: 9 | Call of Juarez: Gunslinger PC
This is a traditional linear FPS which does not try to pretend to be anything more. If focuses on the fun action, without any lengthy, distracting cutscenes trying to win some Oscar. And the result is brilliant action filled entertainment!

The way the narrator follows you through the various levels is done brilliantly, some old gunslinger is telling his life story to a younger man, while you are living out all the action as he is talking. The story feels alive and natural, and with more than a few golden nuggets of humor tossed in. It is overall a light hearted experience with colorful graphics and sun filled environments.

For a budget priced game, I was very surprised to the level of polish and detail gone into it. And notably, the 3D landscape is among the best I have ever seen in any game so far. It just goes on and on into the horizon, and you just want to run into it and explore every rock.

However, as mentioned before, the game is rather linear, so you are pretty much confined to keeping within the bounds of the main path. But, the surrounding huge, beautiful landscape immerses you into that good old Western feel. The 3D engine in this game is really awesome at outdoor environments.

A multitude of rewards keeps you motivated to go on, and the game is never stingy. No need to be too concerned about conserving ammo for example, this is all about running head on and shooting badguys.

You have three main types of weapons; long range, short range and explosives. Choosing the right one for the right challenge is important, and adds an element of strategy. There is also some type or role playing element here, since you continuously earn experience points which you can spend on various skills or benefits, such as concentration which slows time slightly when you aim, or faster reloading times.

If I have to point at some negative aspects of the game, the only one that pops to mind would be the quick-draw mini game appearing when you duel. In theory it is a nice touch to simulate the excitement of a classic duel fight, but the way it is implemented does not work very well. At best it is not entertaining, in the worst case it is quite frustrating and blocks you from moving on to the fun parts.

Overall, the best gaming value for money I have seen in a while, if you are at all into arcade shooters then you cannot go wrong here. :)
