World War II has never been so fun.

User Rating: 8.5 | Call of Duty: World at War PS3
Call of Duty: World at War adds an exciting new feel to the series after its predecessor Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. The same old mechanics that make all the Call of Duty games great is back with new additions. While the gameplay is very similar to its counterparts, the new feel and exciting eerie story will keep your playing for hours.

Call of Duty: World at War takes place in the prime of World War II. You'll first take the role of Private Miller of the United States Marine Corps. Miller was captured by the Japanese along with his squad mate. The first scene your first view of the violent and eerie story. Miller is rescued by the Marine Raiders and the first missions has your squad fighting for your life to escape from the Makin Islands.

The next role you take of Private Dimitri Petrenko. This character is unique because he is responsible for the assassination of General Heinrich Amsel. The very first missions you play as Private Petrenko you get to experience the assassination first hand. As the story progresses, Dimitri's character develops. Three years after the assassination of General Amsel is were Dimitri's story really starts to pick up.

Last but not least is the role of Petty Officer Locke. You play as Locke for only one mission of the game, but It is one of the most different missions and also one of the most entertaining. Locke is the gunner of a Black Cat fighter plane. As you progress through the mission, it gets more intense every second. From gunning in the air to rescuing helpless people from the cold depths of the ocean. Black Cats is by far one of the most entertaining missions in both gameplay and visuals.

The plot to Call of Duty: World at War is nothing to call home about. It follows the U.S. and European progress through the war and ultimately ends in the end of World War II. World at War is so historically correct that it leaves little room for creativity. While the gameplay during each missions is great, the plot lacks the creativity that makes the single player campaign re-playable. As you progress through the campaign it feels as is if your just along for the ride and have no control as to what is happening.

Additionally added to Call of Duty: World at War is a new cooperative campaign. The co-op campaign follows the exact same story as the single player campaign. With the cooperation of your friends, or random players, it makes the campaign more fun to experience with more players.

One of the main qualities that makes Call of Duty games so great is the incredible multiplayer. World at War is no exception. The game follows the same baseline of Call of Duty 4. Including customizable classes, perks, and prestige mode. Thankfully, World at War made prestiging worth while. Prestige mode is the mode that you can enter when your online profile is at its highest rank. With Prestige mode comes a consequence. You will loose everything that you've come to acquire in your multiplayer campaign. Including weapons, weapon attachments, and perks. Prestige mode is only recommended for the hardcore players that will be playing the game in the long run and squeezing it for all of its replay ability.

A new game mode is introduced to players after they complete the single player campaign. Nazi Zombies is by far one of the most addictive game modes in a game to date. In Nazi Zombies there are endless hordes of well, Nazi zombies. Originally, the game was released with only one Nazi Zombies map. But with every map pack you buy you get another Nazi Zombies map. This mode allows you to either fend off endless waves of zombies by yourself or with four other players.

While World at War feels like a replica of Call of Duty 4 with a World War II theme, it adds exciting new experiences in both the campaign and multiplayer modes. Sadly the campaign feels like ride that you have no control over. But the multiplayer and Nazi Zombies mode easily make up for the campaigns dullness.

Positives:
+ Prestige mode now has a purpose.
+ Same great multiplayer from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
+ Nazi Zombies mode.
+ Four player co-op.

Negatives:
- Campaign's story lacks creativity.
- Sometimes its too familiar to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
