Review from a Campaign Only Perspective

User Rating: 8 | Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare PS4

I will be the first to admit I am not a huge Call of Duty fan overall. The whole multiplayer aspect isn't something I've ever really been in to. That being said, when the games prices go down and I can get them on sale, I do indeed enjoy the campaigns quite a lot. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was one of the better ones I've played and if you can find it cheap and are looking for a fun FPS campaign, this one is the way to go.

I picked this game up for a couple of bucks because I was hoping for a new FPS campaign that wasn't also 40 hours. When you don't have a lot of time on your hands, a short-ish campaign is a great thing to find. Infinite Warfare is a short campaign with a lot of quality. The game has some seriously good production values and a rock solid frame rate. I enjoyed the gunplay and movement while going through the campaign. Weapons are varied and creative, even having different types of ammo that have different effects on robot or human enemies.

A short while into the campaign, you become aware that there are side missions to be taken on. These include ship boarding and aerial dogfighting side missions. Both types are really fun to play, but by the end the dogfighting side missions get a little repetitive. Fortunately when you start feeling this way about them, you will likely have completed them all. The ship boarding side missions are extremely well done also, where some of the missions give you the option to go full stealth, picking off enemies one by one and sneaking around to meet your objective. Others are a guns blazing affair in the more traditional sense. This tempo keeps thing fresh and interesting without overstaying it's welcome.

The story isn't particularly strong, but it's serviceable as a story in a Call of Duty game. It won't leave you with a grand sense of loss when it is over, but the characters are likable enough that you root for them and feel for them in their trying moments. In particular you have a robot companion who is introduced early in the game and becomes one of the crew during the campaign. His story is unique and contributed to the sense of camaraderie that you often hear about developing amongst soldiers in the trenches of war.

Overall, if you are like me and really only enjoy a good FPS campaign here and there, grab this one on the cheap and have some fun blasting bad guys with cool weapons and some fun variation.
