Classic Burnout action on the go...

User Rating: 8 | Burnout Dominator PSP
Dominator is the sixth game in the Burnout franchise, and the second outing on the Playstation Portable. I've been a huge fan since Burnout 2: Point of Impact and have followed the series since, although I have yet to play Burnout: Legends on PSP so I cannot draw comparisons between both PSP games.

In essence, this game feels like a heavily modified version of the 4th in the series – Revenge, as Dominator features similar graphics, vehicles, tracks and presentation as its forerunner. The burnout chain system returns from Burnout 1/2 and is better than ever and really adds another dimension to play with. Everything you may have come to expect from a Burnout title is here, such as – a huge range of cars to choose from including Tuners, Hot Rods, Classics, Super cars, Racing cars and of course the Dominator cars. The game features a decent selection of tracks from around the world, examples of which are the city environments, woodland, motorway, southern European towns and German autobahn tracks. The game packs some of the popular game modes such as Race and Road rage, as well as the new and exciting 'Maniac' mode. However Dominator is missing the staple Burnout component that is Crash mode. I won't go into it as I'm not a fan of Crash mode, but it is completely absent, so don't expect to take part in some puzzle-based pile-ups.

The graphics are great, not the best I've seen on PSP but impressive none the less. As mentioned earlier the game looks very similar to Revenge which is quite an achievement. The soundtrack isn't so great though, there are a number of songs/tracks worth listening to, but the majority of music in Dominator may as well be muted. The sound effects on the other hand are excellent and really bring the cars and races to life.

Burnout: Dominator on the PSP is a brilliant achievement. It contains many of the things that made Revenge and Point of Impact great, as well as throwing a handful of new ideas into the mixture. It doesn't do a whole lot new, but it's not trying to re-invent the wheel, this is Burnout on a handheld, and it's as good as it sounds.
