An Awesome Racer!

User Rating: 9.4 | Burnout GC
This was one of the first games I got for my Gamecube and I've had it ever since. Despite technically "superior" sequels like Burnout 2 and Revenge, this is still my favourite of the series and one of my favourite racing games.

There are a few different modes in Burnout including a pretty well done Championship mode. I say "pretty well done" because it is quite short. In this mode you can unlock different tracks and the Face-Offs. The tracks you unlock range from medium to hard difficulty but it mostly depends on what car you are driving as some handle very well around the sharp corners and some...not so well. The Face-Offs enable you to challenge for different cars. These include Muscle Cars, Saloons and even Buses. Overall I'd say the Championship mode could have been much longer but it is fun while it lasts.

There is also multiplayer that offers splitscreen and a choice of CPU controlled cars. There is also a Survival option. With Survival on you are eliminated when you crash. This is a pretty good addition as it makes things a lot more tense. You can also do a single player Survival mode.

The controls in Burnout are simple and easy to get used to. You have the A button to accelerate, B for brakes, Control stick or Control pad for steering and the Right trigger for Turbo. You can switch the controls around a bit if you want but those controls listed are the defaults and I think they work best. At least for me.

The cars in Burnout handle very well once you get used to them and all the cars are vary on speed and handling. The AI Drivers are generally quite dumb but it always funny to see them go full speed in to the back end of a bus...Until you get caught up in the mess. The tracks are always flowing with traffic and adds a good challenge as without them the game would be extremely easy.

The graphics in Burnout are very well done in my opinion. There is a wide range of detailed textures on the tracks and the cars. Crash animations sometimes look a bit stiff or jumpy in places and sometimes cause clipping but it's not that bad.

As much as I like the graphics in this game, I like the Music even more. The music is a mix of Techno and rock and adds to the game very well. It's a game soundtrack I could listen to all day. The sounds in the game are generally decent as well. The cars sound good but some crashes are a bit weak.

If you haven't played this game I suggest you do. You won't regret it. If you have played the other games in the series this might seem a bit lacklustre in terms of game modes but it's very cheap nowadays and worth the money.
