Bubble Bobble suffers in its translation to the small screen.

It is staggering how many adaptations of this game exist. It goes a long way to showing the enduring fun of controlling these two Bubble Bobbling monsters. The Game Boy version has its heart in the right place gets it about half right. First off, the music is incredible. For some reason, the lo-fi crunch the Game Boy's synthesizer adds makes the classic jingle more awesome than normal. The graphics look great as well and the sprites are large and surprisingly detailed-- but therein lies the problem. Unlike the arcade game and most home console ports, the levels are too large to fit on one screen at the same time. This means it's possible to fall onto an unseen monster off screen, which makes gameplay at times frustrating. The levels have been changed to accommodate this which changes the feel of the game significantly and not really for the better. It's not a total bust and there is still a good hunk of Bubble Bobble joy to be had here and it might be enough for nostalgia seekers on the go but for an introduction to this wonderful game there are many better ports to be found.
