User Rating: 9.3 | Brave Fencer Musashiden PS
No one has rated this game since 2001.. which is a shame, but at the same time I suppose makes sense. It's doubtful many people will actually read this; Brave Fencer Musashi, while in my opinion an excellent game, isn't very well remembered and isn't too famous for a Square game, I've found. Personally, this is one of my all-time favorite games. Sure, it's cheesy at times, but there's just something about it. It's is an interesting hybrid of platform and RPG; jumping is essential, but so is walking around talking to people in town, buying items, and solving puzzles. The use of assimilating monsters' powers make you face battles with strategy, and the many timed puzzles encourage you to think quickly. As for the sound.. Square does indeed continue their trend of quality sound effects, and they don't disappoint. The voice acting isn't perfect, but it rarely is.. some characters, such as Musashi and Princess Fillet, have incredibly squeaky, over-enthusiastic voices, but that is to be expected. It isn't completely unbearable, and somehow is part of the charm of it. BFM has all kinds of fun details that make the game special. For example, buying milk at the grocery store heals your HP, but if you don't use it and let it go bad, it turns into spoiled milk. But wait! Don't throw it away! A few BFM-days later, it has turned into yogurt-- and the longer you keep it, the more HP it heals! Cheese also ages in a similar fashion. Another fun part of BFM is to buy toys at a store in town; you can take them out of their boxes in your 'room' at the castle..each toy has several motions or phrases it does when you press a button. Alternatively, you can keep the toy (especially a limited edition toy) in its box, and sell it later at a higher, mint-condition price. Not exactly what you might expect from this kind of game! All in all, I highly recommend this lesser-known Square game to anyone looking for an entertaining, unusual RPG/action/platformer. ... Now, if only my copy wasn't all scratched up beyond the point of playability... T_T
