Bookworm Adventures is a fair and bare puzzle RPG.

Popcap make good games; cheap games, but good games nonetheless. Bookworm Adventures is another solid game that is fun but feels very bare. The object of the game is to take the sixteen letters on the screen and create a word to attack your foes. Bookworm Adventures is a puzzle RPG. A very linear puzzle RPG. You enter a stage and battle one enemy, move ahead to the next enemy waiting, and keep going until you reach the boss. The bigger the word you spell, the more damage it will do to your enemies. Status effects such as burn, freezing, poison, and losing a turn are all here like an RPG game would have. Lex the worm doesn't have any of these abilities naturally like his foes do, but he can earn them by defeating bosses. The enemies in the game are not very creative or original. The game's dialog is very cheesy and not very funny. The presentation of the game obviously looks like something suited for children, but it's a simple puzzle game that anyone can enjoy.

When you defeat a boss they will have a goody for Lex to retrieve and use to his own advantage. Some are extra heart containers and some are items that enhance Lex's attacks when spelling words. At the beginning of each stage you are allowed to choose up to three attack enhancing items. One item for example deals extra damage to the enemy when you spell a word with the letters x,y, or z. One item does extra damage when you spell a word that has anything to do with metal, bronze, or steel. These items are neat little ideas and make the game have a more strategic feel. There are some nice ideas in Bookworm Adventures, but not all of them work very well consider how linear the gameplay is. One annoyance is how most of the enemy's attacks are all the same. For example when an enemy stuns Lex, he loses a turn. When an enemy turns Lex to stone, he loses a turn. When Lex is frozen, he loses a turn. So you have all these enemies but few have unique identities. As said before, the characters are dirt cheap and not very creative. It is a $10 game however, and for a $10 game, the animation and production is actually quite slick to be honest. Bookworm Adventures is a nice little puzzle RPG game that may be enjoyed by crossworders, scrabblers, and other word game fans. Otherwise, the hardcore gamer may want to approach with caution.
