Same Soul, Different Body

User Rating: 7 | Bloodborne PS4

My two cents: Bloodborne is likely the most accessible Souls game, but it doesn't improve upon its clunky predecessors in any meaningful way. Think of it as Demon/Dark Souls Gaiden, if you will. It's fun for a few nights of mindless hack and slash, but the awesomely grimy gothic atmosphere carries the tired clunk-o-matic mechanics only so far.

That being said, I know why many people dig these games, and I get it. Masochism aside, when you step back and look at the game as a whole, you may see it for what it truly is: the latest version of a game (with many names) that FROM has been developing since the mid-90s. Maybe one day, they'll update the "soul" of their endlessly mutating creation to match the beauty of its aesthetics. Fingers crossed.

Until then, Bloodborne is a solid, if uninspired, action game with stat-building and darkly quirky style. Give it a shot--especially if you love the Souls series or have never dared to subject yourself to the many gruesome and pointless deaths that await you when stepping into their worlds.
