Blacklight: Retribution is a nice F2P FPS, but it needs a lot of work...

User Rating: 7.5 | Blacklight: Retribution PC
Blacklight: Retribution is one of those games that have an great style and spectacle, but that's it. I actually played Blacklight: Retribution in the first Closed Beta. When the game was full released, I automatically downloaded it to see if some bugs and balance problems were fixed. the bugs were fixed and the game had more balance, but other things went really wrong...

Gameplay: Blacklight: Retribution is very fun multiplayer game to play, it tries a lot to do new things in this overused FPS genre (specially the F2P ones). While 70% of the F2P FPS games out there try to be the next top shooter using old mechanics (basically they are Counter Strike or Quake clones), Blacklight: Retribution steps up in the therms of gameplay. It has some nice gameplay twists, like the ability to see through walls (everyone can do this) for a limited time and you can waste match points to buy flamethrowers or an Mechwarrior (and some other things) in a real time match. All of this is pretty cool, but if you are in a team of low level players, and the enemy team is filled with average level players, the match won´t be that fun. Just imagine an enemy team with 2 Mechs and your team with zero (it happened to me plenty of times), your team gets annihilated with an small chance of recovery. Blacklight: Retribution needs more balance, but that is being fixed by patches, so this is not a big deal.
Blacklight: Retribution tries to break the chain of the F2P FPS genre, but it suffers from some problems. The gameplay is fast, simple and smooth but this is what an average FPS should be. If you took out the two extras that I mentioned before, Blacklight: Retribution would still be an fun game to play, but it would feel generic.

Graphics/Sound Design/Connection: The graphics are great, Blacklight: Retribution uses the Unreal Engine 3 in full effect and it owns some of the competition in therms of graphics. The sound design is also well done but the menu could have some more musics. Now here comes the biggest negative point in Blacklight: Retribution, the awful connection. When I first played the Closed Beta, my ping was always between 50ms and 60ms. In the full release I got between 160ms and 200ms, with these ms rates it is hard to hit something. I made some research to see if the problem was my connection and... it wasn't. The problem is that the the connection "is being bounced across the Atlantic to the US and then to the EU servers"... (I read this in one forum post). There is an fix, the direct connection to the US servers...

I don´t know if this connection problem was already fixed, but if it hasn't yet, it is an big let down.

So this is my review for Blacklight: Retribution. this game gets an weak 7.5 final score. I didn't give 7 because of the fresh mechanics that where implemented in the game.
