Rapture is as beautiful as haunting and severely creepy. Bioshock scores.

Bioshock is set in the underwater city of Rapture where the world is twisted, mysterious and very much sans life. The game doesn't outright try to scare you but its the little mutterings of the splicers and all other enemies that makes the atmosphere totally creepy and how they come dashing at you out of dark corners forcing you to a sudden retreat and outbursts from whatever weapon or ability you hold.

The weapons that you get to use and upgrade is such a unique system like never before. From wrench, revolver, shotgun, machine gun, RPG, Grenade launchers, arrows, napalm etc. to abilities like fire, electric shock, insect swarm, rage, cold blasts etc. everything is totally fun and you can plan various ways to take down enemies. The main villain of the game is Fontaine, who taunts you the most part of the game and in the end hardly puts up a challenge. The game makes great use of environment around you to tackle situations. The game is not set in totally dark environments but shades of dark colors and creepy corridors and walls with nasty writings on them. The big daddies are potent rivalsthat need to be put down to secure the girl and depending on whether you harvest her or save her, you get to upgrades. There are bots and turrets and cameras that you can hack and turn to your favor or shoot them straight. The game is filled with various audio diaries that provide a background to Rapture and the subsequent stories thereon. One thing I totally disliked about the game was the final fight. I finished it in over 25 seconds. Just shot over RPG's and Grenades and boom it was over. Totally sad and unchallengeable end to such a dark and beautiful game.

Bioshock will haunt you. That's for sure. It's not like doom 3 or dead space, but it serves as a hauntingly creepy game with enough weapons and abilities and upgrades to put many good games to shame. The weapons upgrade stations, gene swap bank, health upgrade stations, U-Invent machines etc. will take time as you figure out how beautifully complex and yet simple this shooter is. That said, the enemies hardly pose challenge in the game, and you can make a breeze of a walk over them easily.
