"Battlefield 4 multiplayer is a blast and definitely the best reason to return to this hallowed franchise or dive in for the first time. Dark Souls III

"This is the third in a series of dark fantasy role-playing games known for their brutal difficulty and unforgiving nature. It gives minimal direction and little room for error. As with its predecessors, playing Dark Souls III means accepting two extremes: recurring defeat, and the reward of breaking through it. This is a game that recognizes the value of perseverance, tearing you down before it pulls you back up, reinforcing the spots where it broke you, preparing you for that next valley just down the road."

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided

"Deus Ex: Mankind Divided refines and reinforces the defining foundations of the series. It creates challenging situations and gives players the tools and flexibility to deal with them in a multitude of ways, all within an absorbing cyberpunk world. Although not a significant departure from Human Revolution, Mankind Divided is still a uniquely fulfilling experience, one which feels rare in games today."

Doom

"But without a doubt, the loud and chaotic campaign is Doom's strongest component. It's straightforward and simple, but it serves its purpose: to thrust you into increasingly dire scenarios fueled by rage and the spirit of heavy metal. Many shooters chase the thrill Doom delivers, but few are as potent in their execution. It captures the essence of what made the classic Doom games touchstones of their day, and translates it to suit modern palates with impressively rendered hellscapes and a steady influx of tantalizing upgrades. Doom is the product of a tradition as old as shooters, and while it's not the model to follow in every case, modern shooters could learn a thing or two from Doom's honed and unadulterated identity."

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

Fallout 4

"Fallout 4 can be an intoxicating experience. You're often forced to sacrifice something--a relationship, a lucrative opportunity, or your health--to make gains elsewhere. And the deeper down the rabbit hole you go, the more you wonder: what if I chose a different path? You second guess yourself, not just because you had other options, but because you aren't sure if you did the right thing. The fact that your decisions stick with you after walking away from the game is a testament to the great storytelling on hand. Fallout 4 is an argument for substance over style, and an excellent addition to the revered open-world series."

Far Cry Primal

"When it uses the Stone Age setting to elevate the combat and reinforce the brutality of nature, it thrives. It fosters a give-and-take relationship with the wilderness, granting you the means to survive, but also the threats you have to overcome. That focus on primitive times can become a hindrance at certain points, with limited tools and repetitive combat, but in the end, Far Cry Primal stays true to its callous setting, fleshing out every layer of the captivating world it creates."

FIFA 16

"FIFA needed a year like this. Without serious competition from Konami’s PES in the past few years (until now), and with Ultimate Team keeping players playing and paying all year round, there’s been no pressing motivation to ring the changes. FIFA 16 can be stubborn and stifling, but it feels gloriously new, and having to learn fresh strategies and nuances in a game series like this is an almost-forgotten pleasure."

"Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is about the fluid and frantic action, which propels you towards the next battle, and then the next, and then the next. Journey (PS4)

"It is possible that Journey will not move you. In such a case, it is simply a beautiful game with a glorious soundtrack, grounded by a wistful cello melody later threaded through a warm quilt of winds and strings. The chance you might be swept away, however, makes it worth plunging your feet into the warm sand. If you are returning to Journey, a higher resolution and a higher frame rate are your ostensible rewards for returning--a return that doesn't cost you anything if you already own the game on the PlayStation 3. But Journey's real rewards aren't so pedestrian. Journey offers you comfort. It gives you companionship in a lovely but forsaken world. It gives you reason to dream even when facing loss."

Very lowest common denominator list to my mind, where are Alien Isolation and Soma among others???

I can't seem to get into MGS V. I paid full price back in September 2015 and still have only gotten into 1 mission past the intro. i have played through MGS 2, 3, & 4. I think the open world concept in V is what throws me off. I haven't figured out what I'm supposed to be doing. In my first "mission" i silently killed off everyone and then there was nothing else to do but go back to mother base.

Most of 2016 has been spent on GtA V and Witcher 3. Now I'm on the hunt for the next game to hook me in for 3+ months. It's nice that this list includes price ranges from $15-60 and a range of genres. I'm glad many of these are starting to come down in price (both retail and used). Ready to use a B2G1 coupon and stock up for a bit.

The PS4 PS+ free games lately haven't been for me. They've been interesting but no more than for a few minutes to check them out. I suppose I could always go back and work through the PS3 games they've added...

Avatar image for deactivated-58363443497b3

@Hvac0120: I've spent 180 hours in MGSV. Still going for 100%. Hands down one of the best games I've ever played, and I say that as a Metal Gear fanatic.

Of course, that's only because the core stealth-action gameplay has been polished to a mirror sheen. The story is frankly quite bad. I think it would have been bad even if Konami didn't interfere, there are so few twist and turns there. At least we can take comfort in having had a great conclusion to the story, as V adds virtually nothing to the canon.

Comments be depressing. Personally I own a PS4 and not an XBOX 1 simply because I can't afford both and there were more exclusives on PS4 that interest me. So yeah, I think the PS4 has had the better games, but I can't stand the PlayStation fanboy mentality here though. Don't get me wrong, there's more than enough fanboys for XBOX 1 as well, but I feel like this community is far more vocal and toxic.

I'm sure that's because this community is emboldened by the perception that they are "winning" and yes, I've heard all about how back in the last generation it was the XBOX community that was so insufferable. So what? If you agree that that was wrong of them (and you should) then that means it's wrong of you now (and it is). Take the higher roads peeps. Anyone who thinks they are on a side is on the wrong side.

Avatar image for Theconsciousss

@LonelyStep: It is depressing. It's really not worth fighting people over the piece of plastic that they purchased. To look at the larger picture, competition between Microsoft and Sony is good for the consumer because both products have to be competitive. We should give the console war a rest, and fight the truly important war of our time: Colgate vs. Crest! Those Colgate people are idiots. Crest is way better!

Note that Kinect games aren't included (there are two that would make the list) and Rise of the Tomb Raider and Inside are not included since both are launching on the PS4 soon.

PS4 has 6 current gen console exclusives rated 90+. Xbox One has 0.

PS4 has 55 current gen console exclusives rated 80-89. Xbox One has 14.

PS4 has 36 current gen console exclusives rated 75-79. Xbox One has 9.

That's 97 PS4 games not on the Xbox One with a ranking of 75+, versus 23 Xbox One games not on the PS4 with a ranking of 75+.

Microsoft has always sucked at bringing good games to its console. This is nothing new.

@7tizz:

Hmmmm...you failed to address Microsoft's poor game collection for the Xbox One.

@7tizz: "Oh, and Metacritic as a source is rather poor"

We could go by sales. But that would just reflect poorly on the Xbox again.

By every relevant metric you fail. But take hope! 74 million med kits were picked up in Halo last month. Microsoft tracks the important stats you know.

You know the list is flawed when War Thunder is on there...
