Decent Kart Racing

User Rating: 7 | Beach Buggy Racing PS4

Purchased this for $5.00 with the Plus when it was on sale.

As background on my tastes, while I'm a fan of Mario Kart, games like ModNation Racers and Little Big Planet Karting on the PS3 left something to be desired. I wanted a simple fun karting game for the PS4 and while this game isn't as polished as Mario Kart, this game fits the bill for my purposes.

There are 5 main options:

1. Split Screen - where you can play offline with up to 4 people. The days of 4 player split screen seem to be a bit a memory for most developers and it's nice to be able to play a game with your mates in the same room. When playing 2 player, the game splits the screen to top and the bottom.

2. Quick Race - where you can play a race choosing over 15 courses and 4 HP levels (150, 250, 500 and 1000).

3. Championships - You get a choice of 8 vehicles and can compete at the 4 HP levels. Each championship has 4 courses and the winner is the one with the most points at the end of the last course.

4. Daily Challenge - Each day there's a new challenge and if you meet it, you get coins which you can use to get stuff. This isn't a buy coins with real money kind of game so no need to worry about getting shaken down for money when you want something in the game. So far the challenges have been just that, challenging and for me at least, they're not a play once and you've got it.

5. Career - You get to choose from 10 characters and well, play out a career.

As expected, there's a variety of power ups - 27 in total and there's a screen where you can read about what each does.

It looks like there are 45 trophies.

Another great feature is that the game only instals to 158.6 MB and the save file is about 3.15MB - and while I appreciate that this game is quite different from an AAA title, other developers should take note that not every game needs to be 50GB with a save file of 100MB - you can have a good game without hogging up too much valuable HDD space.

Overall, no real complaints. The game isn't broken - it plays well and it plays well in multi-player.

As a $5.00 purchase, I'm not disappointed. If I had paid $10.00 for the game, I don't think I'd have been disappointed.

If you want a simple kart game for your PS4, here you go.
