Most gamers want two things from a game; a challenge, and fun. Battletoads offers both of these, but the challenge is too much. It's the hardest Nes game ever made, but Battletoads is also one of the best Nes games ever made.
You must help toad brothers rash and zitz save pimple from the dark queen. The plot makes it sound like a piece of cake, but the game is not a piece of cake. Get to the third level, and you'll see why it's almost impossible to beat.
The graphics are the best on the Nes. they look so much like a Snes game, and the rich visuals really stand. It isn't a surprise since the game was made by Rare, a classic third party developer, who worked hard on the games rich graphics. The sound isn't half bad either, and the music is very catchy.
The game suffers from one main and obvious problem; it's really hard. Another problem is the 2 player mode that's almost broken. It actually makes the already hard game harder. For example, when you are trying to hit an enemy in your way, some times the 2nd player gets in the way, and you hit him. This is very unusual, since the 2nd player is supposed to be inferior to the first player's attacks like in other games. However, friendly fire destroys you chances of beating the game.
What makes it worse is that unlike most other games, if your partner dies and you don't, you start the entire level over again. I'm sure Rare was trying to give us a challenge. That's fine, if the 2nd player wasn't vulnerable to the first player's attacks. This gets incredibly annoying because you will die, a lot in this game. Most of you probably won't beat the 3rd level at all. Luckily there are warps in some levels that allow you to skip 2 levels. But it's still impossible to beat it with 2 players.
Somehow, this doesn't really matter. The game is so much fun and addictive. The items, powerups, and action is so awesome, that you'll still come back to try and beat this game hundreds of times. This is one of those games that keeps you coming forever, even when you finally beat the game.
If you manage to reach the 11th level with 2 players, the 2nd player will not move. This is an obvious glitch, and it won't stop until the 2nd player loses his lives. And you know what that means; you will start the level all over again. This proves that the 2 player is almost broken. For those who were able to beat 2 player mode, you sirvived the impossible.
Still, Battletoads is easily one of the best Nes games ever made, and is really fun to play. It's rich graphics, catchy music and great detail will keep you in your spot, playing this game for years and years. I've played nothing as challenging as this, but I absolutely love this game. It's very hard, but it's fun, and if it isn't fun for you, then you're missing out on the fun. If you want an extremely challenging game, this is it. But if you also want an addictive Nes game, look no further than Battletoads, a classic for the ages.
