If you like mindless destruction (like me) and can ignore the weak story, then you'll enjoy Battle Tanx: Global Assault.

Another game from the days I rented games all the time. This definitely one of the few that stood out. Though I can't say the same for the story, Battle Tanx: Global Assault is a great action game that will provide fans of games like Twisted Metal and Vigilante 8 a satisfying gaming experience especially if you've got some friends to play it with.

In Battle Tanx: Global Assault, you're tossed into a post-apocalyptic world where a disease has killed nearly all of the women on the planet. The remaining women are worshiped as Battle Lords and there's this evil lady who wants to take over the world and blah blah blah blah. Like I said, the story's pretty bland and generic. But thankfully, you'll be having too much fun blasting enemy tanks into oblivion to really care about it or notice it.

You have multiple tanks available for you to use which you purchase using tank bucks each time you respawn but chances are you'll just stick with the standard M1A1 Abrams which a good all around tank. But if you need a little extra firepower, you can use either the Rhino or the hulking Goliath tank. These are the only 3 I ever used. The other tanks are either just too weak or their weapons aren't powerful enough. Speaking of weapons, this game has an impressive array of firepower available for you to use. Obviously, you have your standard tank cannon. But you also have swarm missiles, flamethrowers, laser cannons, guided missiles, grenades, mines, and nukes available. Yes I said nukes! Nothing but the strongest of tanks will survive one of these. There are other weapons but I can't think of them all.

Gameplay and level design are both excellent. The levels are all very big so there's plenty of places for you and your enemies to hide and fight and a good portion of the objects and buildings are completely destructible and most of the time have some nice weapon pickups hidden inside. Standard controls are well laid out but can be customized if you want to do that.

Graphics and sounds are decent considering the time this game came out. After all, high def gaming and sound effects weren't really a big thing yet in 1999. Tank models and textures as well as environment textures look good. Your tank gun has a nice boom with lots of bass as would be expected as do the explosions. And the game is accompanied by a rock n roll soundtrack which suits it well.

Probably the most standout feature in this game is the multiplayer. It's so much fun having a bunch of friends over to either aid you in campaign mode or take you on in a deathmatch. I can't really remember all of the mutiplayer game modes but you and your friends will get quite a few hours of fun out of all of them.

Overall, Battle Tanx: Global Assault is a great game. Though it is hampered by a weak story and limited single player repeatability, it's faced paced action, mindless destruction, and excellent multiplayer offerings make it a worthwhile buy for fans of action and vehicular combat games.
