War is just adorable!

Battalion Wars is a great mix of action and real-time strategy. You control a "do-gooder" style army throughout the game, seemingly modeled after the U.S. At first, your enemy is a Soviet like nation in which you are engaged in a tense cease fire. Eventually, both of those countries conflict with a bitter, hate-filled army, similar to a Middle Eastern type country. When this happens, your army unites with the Tundran (soviet-esque) army. Basically, they lend a hand, but you have no control over them. Eventually, the third army makes kind of a "deal with the devil" type situation, and they become extremely powerful.
As far as gameplay, it's biggest accomplishment is also the game's biggest downfall. You directly control one unit, which you can choose. But you can also give orders to battalions or individual units. This is great, but the controls can be very cumbersome. I ended up frustrated and just resorted to controlling the whole army just using the "follow me", "wait here", and "attack" commands, and I often just went with one unit at a time to complete certain things. Overall this worked well, and the game managed to still be very entertaining.

The graphics & sound were above par, with detailed yet cartoony environments, characters & machines. I was skeptical at first of the "cute" aspect to a war game, but it ended up making the game unique and was an asset to the game. The controls were decent overall, but sometimes it's difficult to aim at the particular unit you want when there are many enemies on the screen, and the vehicle controls are just all around weak at times.

I also wasn't crazy about the fact that there are no mid-level saves. Some of the levels are long and have multiple goals, but if you fail on the last one you have to start over. The game managed to stay fun enough that it didn't frustrate me too much, however. The game also isn't so difficult that you'll lose hope at any point, although it will most likely challenge you in spots.

Overall, this game is well put together and worth a try, especially if you're in the market for a more "E" rated war game.
