The movie was awesome! The game, well it licked Rocky Mountain Oysters...

User Rating: 5.5 | Back to the Future NES
Back to the future was one of the first games I got when I finished restoring my NES. (Yes, I needed to restore it) I didn't have very high hopes, as I had already seen the AVGN review, but then again, it couldn't be that bad…
This game is terrible. I think I know why they decided to do what they did, but they did it terribly. The whole running thing is obviously when Marty is running all over Hill Valley trying to figure out what's going on. Why they didn't just make it a Mario-esque side scrolling adventure is beyond me. Instead you get a slightly better Paperboy rip off. The only reason I say it is slightly better is that Paperboy is horrid. This game however, is slightly more playable than not. So you're running up the screen, collecting clocks for some unknown reason, because trust me, I've looked, and they have absolutely nothing to do with the timer. You have to dodge all sorts of strange crap, like a bully, two guys holding a picture window, bees, and hoola-hoop girls. What a mess. Where did they even get these enemies? Did they watch the movie, or not. I bet not. The controls are acceptable, but the game play is bad. You can't even jump over the bench!
The second level is the diner where Marty orders a soda and Biff walks in and yells McFly! We all know that Biff is talking to Marty's father in the movie, but in the game, none of this happens. All you do is stand behind the counter throwing milkshakes at bullies. If I was a bully, and some (this word has been censored for your protection) kid was throwing milkshakes at me, I'd rip his face off. These milkshakes must be made of lead, because they put the bullies down in one hit. The hit detection is awful. You have to stand slightly to the left of the bully, depending on how you look at the screen, and throw the shake or you wont hit them. What a piece of crap!
I've never been able to get past the diner stage, but I know you have to run through Hill Valley again. It's like the first level, but it's the third! After this is probably a level at the High School, as that is the next place on the map, but I have no idea. This game would have been much better if it weren't developed as it was, but alas, it was. One day I'll beat it, but not for a long time. Maybe I'll write another review if and when that day finally arrives.
