A classic that snuck under the table...

Shooters come and go. Something about a single ship against an entire armada and relentless odds seem to get me all misty-eyed and think about that hokey but likable 80's movie "The Last Starfighter." But Axelay had great graphics for the time and original bosses, plus a very cool on the fly weapons changing system. You would select your armaments at the beginning of each stage, progressively getting more powerful weaponry. The soundtrack was catchy and I would catch myself humming it and even to this day I try to find cool remixes of it at Overclocked.org. If old-school 2D shooter is your fancy on a rainy evening and you're R-Typed out and sick of Gradius, give this one a try. The second and third stages alone give the shooter it's character, and while Axelay didn't reinvent the wheel, it's always fun to save the galaxy from utter annhilation one more time.
