Highway carnage, flamethrowers & green screens... yes!

Waaaaay back in the glory days of Origin, Steve Jackson brought Car Wars to the PC. Autoduel was the result, and it was simply awesome for it's time.

Autoduel put you in the role of a highway warrior in a bleak alternate future, similar to the more recent Interstate 76. You had a small amount of starting money, and could run missions for various organizations between cities, or enter an Arena for cash.

The cars themselves were fairly diverse, ranging from the incredibly speedy subcompact to the bulldozer like van. Different chasis could accomodate more or less armor, and handle different weapons, etc. The games weapons were well represented by various graphics, and had a nice assortment. You could outfit your car with lasers, machine guns, mines, and even flamethrowers! The flamethrower was a great graphic which even created a smoke screen that made enemy fire less accurate.

The game actually had a story line, albeit slim, that kept things moving along towards the conclusion. There was a "black market" organization to take down or assist, and you could be as lawless or chicken as you wanted to be. As a courier, you could rig your car for speed and leave your enemy in the dust with spike traps or oil slicks, or take out everything that moved as a vigilante.

In addition to the combat, your character actually gained experience, and these attributes would affect driving, weapon accuracy, and overall toughness.

All in all, Autoduel was an incredible gem at the time. The replayability for a game of it's day was enormous, and graphically it excelled. It's main shortcomings were a pretty slim sound portion (no music, limited effects), and terrible fate of walking miles and miles to the next city if your car got trashed and no outlaws were around to finish you off... Still though, small gripes when stacked against an otherwise gem of a game.
