2K Games today announced Zathura, an Xbox and PlayStation 2 game based on the upcoming film from Columbia Pictures. Developer High Voltage Software, which last worked on Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude, will be helming the project. Zathura is scheduled for release in late 2005.

The adventure game will follow much of the storyline of the movie. Two young brothers who stumble upon a magical board game find themselves mysteriously transported into space. To return to Earth, the young'uns will need to overcome a myriad of obstacles, including reptilian aliens, rocket-propelled robots, and dangerous meteor showers.

The film, scheduled for a holiday release, was directed by actor (Swingers)/director (Elf) Jon Favreau, and it stars Tim Robbins as the boys' father.

GameSpot will have more on Zathura from the floor of E3 next week.
