In a recent interview, director Zack Snyder has revealed that his Army of the Dead sequel is officially titled Planet of the Dead--and strongly hinted about a fan-favorite character that might be making an unexpected return.

Speaking with Inverse in advance of Army of the Dead's prequel, Army of Thieves', October 29 debut on Netflix, Snyder eagerly pivoted to tease some potential plot details about his Dead franchise. "The real adventure would be to see what happened to [Matthias Schweighöfer's Ludwig Dieter] when that safe door closed. Did he get killed by Zeus or not? What happened?... We don't see him die on camera, and there's still some time left. I won't tell you what happens in Army of the Dead 2--aka Planet of the Dead--but let's just say that there's a chance Dieter survives. And there's a chance that brush with death would have caused him to want to find a jailed Gwendoline."

Before this upcoming sequel, Schweighöfer's character is set to appear in Netflix's Army of Thieves, a prequel that will see him joining a misfit crew of aspiring thieves to crack three legendary safes across Europe. We'll have to see what the movie's premiere has in store once it hits the streaming service.

Relatedly, Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead has plenty on the way, between an animated spin-off show, a VR experience, and a prequel film called Army of Thieves which focuses on the safe-cracking specialist Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer). The movie had its very own Comic-Con 2021 panel to tease details of the film, which concluded with a first look teaser trailer.
