Now Playing: Top New Games Releasing On Switch, PS4, Xbox One, And PC This Month -- September 2019

Steam's long-awaited library redesign finally has a release date. If you have a registered Steam account you'll be able to opt-in to an open beta on September 17 to peruse the library's visual overhaul and try out all the new features.

The update introduces two key changes to your Steam library. First up is a new lick of paint that sees the landing page redesigned with a more modern look, and displays quick access to game updates, recently played games, friend activity, and your collections. Valve is also making it much easier to see what your friends have been up to and what they're currently playing, with all of the relevant information now displayed on the home page.

Secondly, the addition of Events will highlight patches and in-game events, and give developers the option to share anything they like, from live streams to fan art. Valve says it wants you to know what's happening with the games you already own without bombarding you with notifications, and Events aims to do just that.

Developers have access to Event-creating tools starting today, so your Steam library will be populated with Events once the overhaul goes live on September 17. Valve has promised that more updates and in-depth information on the upcoming features will be released as we approach the open beta's launch.

This long-in-development update comes at a good time for Valve. Steam has found itself facing some stiff competition in the PC storefront space. The new Epic Games Store has signed a number of exclusivity deals with games over the past year, including Metro Exodus, Shenmue 3, and Oddworld: Soulstorm. Epic recently announced eight more exclusives at PAX West. Then there's GOG Galaxy 2.0, which promises to unify all of your PC games in one single client, solving one of PC gaming's biggest problems.

Looks great. Can I get some free games every week along with the new update? I don't see any problem with expanding my library with good indie games.

@hrv_25: then support them by buying them, not expecting them to be free.

@TruSake: Epic already paying developers for each free download so they are getting paid. Maybe steam should do it too.

My concern is it messing up my skins. I've some that I like. Other than that, it shouldn't bother me too much.

This overhaul doesn't matter to me either way because I'll only ever spend money on GOG and Steam anyway.

This new interface look horrid, and doesn't give me remotely the amount of info on a game I get from the current interface. Can I opt out of this? Please? I don't care about any of these "features" and I'm happy with the interface looking the same as it has. I rather like my convenient sidebar where I know where everything is because it's either alphabetical or alphabetical in my Favorites sub-list.

Hah of course I can't opt out I'm still stuck with the awful chat interface they forced out last year. I basically stopped using the chat when it got blighted with that.

Nice try Steam. You still can't compete with Epic's epic simplicity. Kids don't want features - they want exclusives!

@Deckard2323: Epic should become more simplistic and just stop existing.

@Deckard2323: Epic's epic laziness is more to the point.

What's Epic is the number of people who are that desperate for free games.

@Deckard2323: Either you're working for Epic or you're an idiot. No sane person wants exclusivities on the PC, period. Also Steam beats the crap out of Epic's game store when it comes to features.

Steam Features that Epic doesn't have:

Cloud saves

User Profiles

User Reviews

Forums

Mod Distribution

Groups

Item trading

Library sorting

Account sharing

Streaming to other devices

Broadcasting

Screenshot capture/sharing

User-created guides

Wish Lists

I'm not touching the Epic games store even with with 10 feet pole. I'm not going to support dirt bags that forces exclusivities on PC. Especially when they even go as far as doing it to kickstarter/fig games that advertised being released on Steam when they were raising money.

This is a long time coming. Last visual overhaul was almost 10 years ago.

Go Valve!

I guess "modern" means "crappy" in the context of gaming frontends. ?

Steam's interface has always felt like it was designed by some fat nerd who never finishes anything that he starts.

Like this. If I'm playing multiple games you still have to dig through your library to find them sometimes.

Looks like some good features, I'll be sure to check them out.

Okay... I am both scared and excited. Actually, what I red reminds me a bit of how PS4 social features work, which are ok by me, but sometimes repetitive, Like I keep seeing the same few pictures everytime my friend plays Smite.

But I think on Steam it will be better, since PS4 is kind of slow and typing stuff is a chore.

Here is the thing though, most of the people I've added on Steam, we don't even talk lol idk I sometimes get friend requests and I accept, maybe this will change stuff. Most of my close friends are on PS4, so I socialize a lot more there.

Anyway, something I would really like is to be able to change text size throughout the store and forums and library... etc. It is a tad small. I've tried a theme but it makes things blurry.

There will never 'not' be a day where I don't want to shut this crap OFF. That's cool if people like having those features, but whycan't we have an option to disable all this extra stuff? I don't care what other people are doing in a game. All I want to see is the game, any applicable updates/information, and maybe hours played.

I don't need these goofy useless inventory items, I don't care if someone my friends list got some stupid 'achievement'. I don't even care about my own 'achievements'. I just really don't think it's much to ask to be able to toggle some of this superfluous nonsense off. Reminds me of modern console dashboards... I don't care about any of this information. I just want to turn my system on and see my list of games. That's it.

What would be nice is a list of all games having 'Free Weekend'

ive never taken advantage of a free weekend but that's probably cause I always miss the ones I would care about...
