Your Computer May Not Even Load This Enormous Fan-Made Civilization 6 Map

You'll have time to plan ahead while waiting for it to load.

At least at launch, Civilization VI doesn't offer an option to play on a map resembling Earth. Modders have set out to amend this omission, but at this stage, you may not even be able to load into a game using it.

As documented on the Civ Fanatics forums by modder Gedemon, the Yet Not Another Maps Pack includes a conversion of djvandyke's Greatest Earth Map for Civ V. There's a Giant version that "is already way above the size of the Huge map" and may not load. Then there's the Ludicrous version, which is said to be the "max map size before the game refuse[s] to load." This one will take from 4-5 minutes to load (assuming it doesn't crash).

To install the mod, you'll want to download it (while being wary of what you install on your system), unzip it to the \Documents\My Games\Sid Meier's Civilization VI\Mods folder, and then activate it from the Additional Content menu in-game.

Users are warned not to try a serious game on the map until it's been more extensively tested. If you do decide to try it for yourself, it's recommended that you first go to the Video options and lower the texture sizes.

The warnings aren't to say the map is currently unplayable. Gedemon says they ran 500 turns on the Ludicrous map with 32 civs (you can go over 50) without a crash on their computer, which consists of an i7 4770K, 16 GB of RAM, and a GTX 980 Ti. If you're curious, it took three and a half hours to reach turn 240, and 14 and a half hours to hit turn 475.

Civilization VI was launched last week to a positive critical reception. You can read GameSpot's review here.

worst optimized turn based game in recent memory. I way prefer Civ 5 to this game but it was horribly optimized also. I remember playing the largest maps with a lot of civs and by the end of the game the game would chug down terribly near the end, even worse the more units and cities i had.

Im not sure where all my gpu waste is going with this game, the graphics are worse than Civ 5, yet i'm seeing my gpu max out at times to 100% and while playing Civ 5 my gpu usually was around 50-70%. This is on a 970gtx @1080p, 2xAA, 75 fps.

@Yams1980: My specs are similar. I have GTX970, i7-3770 @ 3.40Ghz with 12GB of RAM and am playing on max game specs as well. I also have my game on my main SSD, and I think that helps a lot. I also turned off all animations in the game options menu, and that speeds things up considerably. I'd always want it to be faster, but right now my late game, huge map is 45 seconds to load from the main menu, and between 15 and 30 seconds between turns. Unfortunately, the game fully animates all the animations you can't see, such as city states shuffling their units in the fog of war. That's why I turn them off.

@nintendians: Prolly faster from HDD/SSD to RAM for the CPU, after that it's gonna load to GPU from RAM, you're gonna have to lower the textures or your gonna get some fps drops between turns because of texture swapping, the game might not be big, but the more units are on the map, and etc. more repeated stuff you're gonna use more space for the gpu than the game actually is in terms of textures.

@maitkarro: yea, only if game that require higher gpu than my gpu, on extreme setting settings, my computer probably run very slow on those newer games.

As much time as they spent to detail this, why would they put the Americas in the Eastern Hemisphere? Look at the mini-map, it's weird.

@barbarossa213: In reality there is no fucking difference, east and west are just man made illusions, it's only a concept, just like time is, it's only relative from your location.

@wtf_666: You mean the moment it started to load, it finished it with a crash.
