You'll Be Able To Choose Your Gender In Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Ubisoft's next big Assassin's Creed game will carry forward the option from Odyssey, letting you choose a male or female character.

Just like 2018's Assassin's Creed Odyssey allowed players to choose between two playable siblings, a man and a woman, the upcoming Assassin's Creed Valhalla will let you choose the gender of your character. But this time, that character will be the male or female version of the same person, Eivor. Despite the possible story ramifications of such a choice, both male and female Eivor will be considered canon to the lore of Assassin's Creed according to narrative director Darby McDevitt.

Eivor is described as a "fierce Viking raider raised on tales of battle and glory." They lead a group of Norsemen that have been driven from Norway by "endless wars and dwindling resources in the ninth century CE." Check out the images below to see the male and female versions of Eivor. The female version is included in the game's collector's edition.

Your journey will take you across the North Sea and into England, where players will "carve out a new future for their clan."

"Being in Eivor's boots as both a Viking raider and a clan leader, players will face the conflicts of establishing a new home in the midst of a power struggle for control of England," creative director Ashraf Ismail said.

The option to play as a man or a woman was one of Odyssey's most notable features, and it was received positively by players. Playing as either Alexios or Kassandra in that game does not affect gameplay, but does change the other character's role in the story. However, both characters have different voice actors and character models, similar to how the male and female Commander Shepards were treated in Mass Effect. Presumably it will be the same for Valhalla.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla is set to release in Holiday 2020 for Xbox Series X, PS5, Xbox One, PS4, Stadia, and on PC exclusively through the Epic Games Store. It will also be available as part of the UPlay+ subscription service.

Choose between a man and a woman? Are you sure they won't change it at launch to be some damn androgynous mix of the two? That seems to be the freaking trend of late in video games.

Its just doesnt belong in an Assassins Creed game. I prefer to play as a male, yes, but if a female protagonist is so important to Ubisoft and other AC fans - fine. Just create a story around that female character.. dont give players a choice like that. Same goes for choices that impact the story in any meaningful way. Those choices just don't belong in an Assassins Creed game

@fox_fury: It is indeed authentic. In Viking culture, they didn't care if you were a woman or man. If you can hold your own, you're good to go.

@KahnArtizt: Shield Maiden are still myth they found one body in a warriors grave and went nuts. The only things they know is that some women knew how to fight to defend the home.

I'll pick the male because I can't see a female wrecking everyone on the battlefield... sorry wouldn't happen.

@r-gamer: yeah, the assassin’s creed games are just so incredibly realistic. Jumping off buildings, scaling everything, fighting off huge armies single-handedly, the whole world conspiracy and reading memories through DNA... Wouldn’t want to spoil all that realism with a female playable character!

@r-gamer: There literally were female Vikings and they were able to become Vikings by being badasses. Vikings didn't care what sex you were. Weird how Vikings are more progressive than you.

Sorry but facts don't care about your feelings. Of all the ones on that list one is a women and is the sister of a viking king. It was predominantly male dominated and your utterly delusional if you think women are equal on the battlefield.

@r-gamer: overall, women are less powerful than men but who would you rather fight? Ronda Rousey, or Michael Cera?

Bottom line is, if you don’t plan on playing as the female character and the game is exactly the same either way, why are you crying?

Much like in Odyssey, I'll be playing whoever has the better voice actor. If this game keeps me playing for as long as Odyssey did, a voice actor that doesn't make me want to rip off my ears is an absolute must.

@UrbanMessiah: I loved Kassandra in Odyssey. I was the lesbian lover of the high seas that also knew to to beat the brakes off of people.

@R4gn4r0k: Well that is because your reply was Totally unnecessary. It is my opinion about the game and has totally nothing to do with you or with anyone else.
I have played For honor 700 hours and stated my opinion about it and you come insulting me for a mere comment that is just an opinion of mine, well even I have my limits and will get mad and call you among. making a comment on an old article and it's a negative one, not cool man.

@daidochus:

First of all, no, I did not insult you. I stated that the gameplay will be revealed on thursday and asked you a question. Didn't use any kind of insulting words. Yet here you are. Twice now using insults in your comments towards me.

Second, no, this article is not old.

And lastly, please stay off the internet if you can't have people replying to you and just want to state your opinion about something in a complete vacuum.

@R4gn4r0k: Then you should know how to rephrase your words better when saying to someone can I have your crystal ball could mean: you are talking out of your ass and don't judge before seeing it. That is how most will perceive that statement. So if you don't want to insult someone think how to write it down better. We are not face to face so I can't see your expression. When you write down words there is no emotion with it so you have to keep that in mind when writing so that you don't insult someone.

And about replying, I am active on GameSpot's comment section, I get a lot of reply's and most of them I shrug off if they have a negative opinion, but if they insult me I insult back, simple as that.

PS: I didn't insult you for the second time, please read accordingly and yes this article is 3 days old and so is in Gamespot's standard old.

Makes sense.

I do hope they rethink the dialogue options though and improve the character writing from Odyssey. Kassandra/Alexios both kinda just got talked at, and their dialogue options were largely limited to, "I agree/disagree with what you just said, please continue and give me a quest."

@gr4h4m833zy: Well it is still a PS4/X1 game. It will be enhanced on new systems and probably running native 4K/60+FPS.

@siarhei: Yes, but it really doesn't take much to make it a male name.

Eivor: Female

Eivar: male

Technically they are the same name with the same meaning. I wonder if UBI will make the distinction, I certainly hope so.

@zero0010: And if Ubisoft made another bonehead decision like they did with Breakpoint and decide to make Valhalla online only. That's that thing that would stop me dead from buying this...
