Now Playing: GS News Update: Yakuza Kiwami 2 Coming To PS4 In North America This Year

On the heels of the Western release of Kazuma Kiryu's last chapter with Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, Sega has announced that we'll soon be able to relive the earlier days--Yakuza Kiwami 2 is coming to PlayStation 4 in North America and Europe on August 28, 2018. The Japanese version, called Ryu ga Gotoku: Kiwami 2, has been out since December 2017, but the localized version is now on the way. Kiwami 2 is the remake of the original Yakuza 2 that came out for the PlayStation 2 back in 2006 (Japan) and 2008 (West).

Yakuza 2 picks up one year after the events of the original game where Kiryu finds himself stuck in inter-clan drama yet again. Turmoil inside the Omi Alliance (rivals of Kiryu's own Tojo Clan), turns animosity into a war in the streets of series-long home Kamurocho. This is all thanks to a coup within the Omi led by the main villain Ryuji Goda. The son of an old Tojo chairman has to return to the yakuza lifestyle to protect the families, with plenty of help from Kiryu of course. And the beloved, yet unhinged Goro Majima also has to pitch in to keep the clan afloat.

Familiar faces like Makoto Date, Osamu Kashiwagi, Haruka Sawamura are central characters to the plot, alongside the Osakan detective Kaoru Sayama who makes her series debut to keep a sharp eye on Kiryu. This is only the setup for the rollercoaster ride that is Yakuza 2.

A completely new addition in Kiwami 2 is a whole campaign called The Truth of Goro Majima where we get to play as the man himself and uncover how he became a construction business tycoon just before the events of Yakuza 2. Playing as Majima was a highlight in the prequel Yakuza 0, and fans got to peer into the personal life of one of the series' most distinguishable characters.

We get another dose of everyone's idol, Goro Majima!

Kiwami 2 uses the new Dragon Engine which is the graphical foundation for Yakuza 6. It provides the best visual fidelity the series ever had, but also allows players to enter shops and buildings without loading times, even during fights. Yakuza 2 brings fans back to Tokyo's fictional red-light district of Kamurocho and also takes us to the riverside Osakan town of Sotenbori; these two locations will look better than ever with the Dragon Engine.

Yakuza isn't complete without its minigames; Golf Bingo and Virtual On are a few of the smaller things to get into. However, the fan-favorite Cabaret minigame from Yakuza 0 makes a return along with the most-valuable platinum hostess Yuki. Majima will also get the Clan Creator minigame as seen in Yakuza 6.

This isn't the first time a PS2-era Yakuza game was remade. Yakuza Kiwami came to the West last year and modernized the series' first release with additional substories, the Majima Everywhere subplot, and tweaks that made the storytelling more cohesive. Voiceovers were re-recorded to capture the improved localization, one aspect the series is known for, and Kiwami 2 is getting the same treatment.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 will be available both digitally and physically for $50; pre-ordered and first-run copies will come in a special steelbook with artwork of Kazuma Kiryu and Ryuji Goda.

@deebee: I was thinking the same thing, why a $20 price difference from Kiwami 1-2, WTF? How can they justify that??

Avatar image for Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@fanboyman: the only way they could justify it is if kiwami 2 is much longer than the previous one --i'm not sure if it is or not. even so, that is a big jump in price for a remake. sony got it right with the shdow of the colossus remake priced at $40USD.

I do not know what I should do!! for years i wanted to try these games. finally did and I love them. I started with Kiwami, now on 0 so already out of order. However I am thinking I should try and play the rest in order, 3 is hard to find so if I cant play that one I can atleast play 2-4-5-6 since I have 4 and 5 on plus.

What does everyone recommend? Catch up on backlog until kiwami 2 releases then play yakuza games straight through? or just play them out of order?

I bought Yakuza zero on release day (in the west) but still haven't been able to finish it. I have tried a few times but just can't get into it at all. The story I admit is pretty good but absolutely everything else isn't, the graphics aren't great, the combat is kind of boring and gets very tedious when you fight someone every street you go down, the maps are tiny.....But it has a large fanbase and lots of people really like it. What am I missing here? What do fans of the series really like about this game? I have gotten to the part of Yakuza zero where you play as Kiryu for the second time and just got the property management part.....does the game get any better or if I don't like it by now should I just stop attempting to get into it?

@drunk_punk: The key differentiator is that this and Yakuza 6 the game engine is built from the ground up for PS4.

Yeesh man, too many Yakuza games coming nowadays. I fear fatigue will set in.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@xenomorphalien: yet you are good with a forza released every year, eh?

Avatar image for xenomorphalien
XenomorphAlien

@Xristophoros: I only bought two Forza games this gen, good enough for me unless they do something really cool. Even then I haven't really played them that much due to my backlog.

Besides, let me know when we get more than one Forza a year.

But nice attempt. Strike 1.

@xenomorphalien: you flame people for being negative on the xbox articles and yet here you are crying for getting too much of a good thing on a playstation article... eh, its not really two new yakuaza games in a year since one of the releases is a remake of the ps2 game. that is quite different than say, yakuza 5 and 6 releasing in the same year... besides, it makes business sense to release kawami 2 while the iron is hot from yakuza 6...

Avatar image for xenomorphalien
XenomorphAlien

@Xristophoros: Yeah, and I'm saying too many games at the same time could cause fatigue. Not really a negative, if I were I'd be saying the games suck, which obviously they don't. Happened to other games before. But don't worry, let's just divert to something Xbox related, right?

"you flame people for being negative on the xbox articles and yet here you are crying for getting too much of a good thing on a playstation article"

Er, no. You see, mine wasn't really a negative. Plus, I don't have a reputation of bashing PS4 games. You, on the other hand, actively shit on anything Xbox related. You, my friend, have the reputation of a fanboy, which is exactly who I flame.

Strike 2. Wanna swing once more?

Avatar image for Franzkill

@xenomorphalien: As long as their rock solid, competent and wild fun gaming experiences they can release as many as they want. Its only fatigue when your oversaturated with half baked, cheap cashgrabs and the Yakuza series is not one of those

Avatar image for xenomorphalien

@Franzkill: You're right, but man. Already 2 Yakuzas this year. Give the fans a little breathing room lol.

Avatar image for Franzkill

@xenomorphalien: Well considering that my two most anticipated Yakuza games (Yakuza and Ishin) never got a localisation outside Japan that fact that were getting these releases more than makes up for it. We should be grateful if anything more than whinny and condescending.

I did manage to finish Yakuza 3 and 4 on the PS3, thoroughly enjoyed them. I've played Yakuza 0 on PS4, but time is a big factor with these games and work. I still also have Yakuza Kiwami 1 to play, then Kiwami 2 and Yakuza 6 when they are released. Arrrrrrgh, not enough time.

Yakuza is SEGA's attempt to capitalize on annual releases like we all know COD and Assassins Creed and even DBZ games are.

Two Yakuza games on 2017 alone. Soon if not already this franchise will be one game a copy and some small mods of the last. Yakuza 6 Song of Life was already boring.

I suppose we should be thankful that SEGA is doing this. They could just give the middle finger to the west as far as this remake goes. I am psyched that the Yakuza series so far has all been released so far in NA as well as Japan.

Thank you SEGA!!!! I started looking on Amazon on a weekly basis to see if they were gonna localize Kiwami 2 and was beginning to lose hope. But Sega (very surprisingly) have been pleasing fans & me alot here recently. Gonna pick this and Song of Life up day one!!!

Does the studio that make these games not like the United States? You think with how popular this series is in the US that they would want to release this ASAP.

Avatar image for Sp00n13
Sp00n13

@austinp: They are actually doing the US a favor by releasing them here at all. The Yakuza series is very Japanese, and is developed for their region. It takes time for them to completely localize the game for the US so that we also have a great experience when we play it.

Please understand that they could just as easily not release these games in the US as Im sure the market for this game is not as big in the US as it is in Japan.

Avatar image for Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@austinp: if they put it out before yakuza 6, and so close to its release, it would eat at its sales... i think yakuza 6 is a far bigger priority to sell well so might as well put that out first...

Avatar image for Jimbowesker
Jimbowesker

@austinp: I dont know for certain, but my best guess is that they were busy finishing up on Yakuza 6: Song of Life before localizing it. Yakuza 6 went gold a few weeks back so timing seems right. Japan game dev's are guilty of making the west wait though.

@CallMeDuraSouka: I have the same problem...once I am caught up with my current backlog I am going to buy 1 or 2 games at a time. That includes Steam sales as well. I rather have less games and more enjoyment out of them. Right now playing catch up is feeling like a chore.

Avatar image for girlusocrazy
GirlUSoCrazy

@CallMeDuraSouka: Buy less games, stick with one til the end. I used to hop around from game to game like that, it was very unsatisfying.

It's OK if you don't play everything. Find out what you want to get out of a game. Play only what really strikes a chord with you.

sega has become one of my favourite publishers of late... amazing how they have turned it around over the past few years... the only dirt on their slate was sonic forces last year. valkyria chronicles 4 is looking to be a return to form for that series as well and is releasing this fall. keep it up, seegaaaaa!
