Yakuza Dev's Judge Eyes Has A New Name, Western Release Date

Prepare for Judgement.

Project Judge, the next game from Yakuza developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, has been given a new name for its Western release. Outside of Japan, the game will be called "Judgement" and it will be available in Summer of 2019. The new information was revealed during the Kinda Funny Games Showcase, where a trailer was also shown.

Unlike previous trailers, this one featured English voices--which is a big change for the developer, given that the Yakuza series was subtitled, instead of dubbed. The trailer ended with confirmation that Greg Chun will voice main character Takayuki Yagami. Chun is a prolific voice actor for video games, having lent his talents to Overwatch, Neir: Automata, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, among other titles.

Now Playing: Judgment - Official Release Window Announcement Trailer | KFG Showcase

Judgement made its debut during the PlayStation Lineup Tour event held earlier this year. It's a narrative driven experience in which players assume the role of an investigator getting to the bottom of murders and other crimes. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's chief creative officer Toshihiro Nagoshi previously described Judgement as "something completely different" from what it has done so far. He also said that it has been in development for around three years.

Alongside the numerous Yakuza titles released over the last couple of years, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio also launched Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, a game based on the beloved manga and anime property Hokuto No Ken. In his review, Matt Espineli awarded Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise an 8/10, saying it has a "melodramatic narrative that skillfully blends new and old storylines" and a "fantastic combat system captures the feeling of Kenshiro's fighting style."

"Lost Paradise may replicate the Yakuza series' format, but it's filled with a passion for FotNS that makes it fantastic all on its own," he added. "While previous games based on the property have adapted its story and characters with some success, few have managed to not only nail the style and tone but redefine what's possible with its world and characters. RGG Studios has done a splendid job at evoking the justice-fueled power fantasy Kenshiro represents, succeeding in revealing more about the historic and beloved character in amusing and unexpected ways."

Just finished up my time with Yakuza: Kiwami and I’ve gotta’a say I loved my time with it. In fact, after playing through it I kept saying to myself “Why did it take me so long to play this franchise?”.

As such I’m looking forward to more titles from this developer (in addition to all the other Yakuza games now, lol.) and hopefully Judge eyes continues in that vein.

Um, yea, if you played any of the Kiwami remakes of Yakuza, you might find FotNS ... bad, very bad. Honestly I LOVE FotNS and when I heard they did a FotNS game I was estatic. But the result, holy christ was it awful, the combat feels heavy in a bad way, Kenshiro ghost tracks like nobodies business, and the enemies are bullshit levels of tedious, and terrible in design.. The game isn't challenging when you break an enemy guard and they instantly reguard in a second punch after you start a combo and or dodge 4 times in a row and get behind you, to punch you once and knock a 3rd of your hp off.

And this was on normal, the mini games are a mess, and going back to having savepoints and no auto save just shows it's age when you have a crash and loss several hours. Along with that, the story? It's mess beyond words, and obviously the person who gave it a high score for it did not play more then an hour of it, cause the story literally makes no sense, the motives and plots are a jumbled car wreck, and hell half the games map isn't even used, which is a waste of programming and time.

I wanted to love that game but holy space macaroni goddess was it just awful.

On a more serious note, HOOORAY! They'll release this game outside Japan! Thank you Sega!

So just another Yakuza game from the trailer... Japanese audio is a must after seeing this trailer. Why bother doing the dubbed version, it pulls you out of the story, the characters and the setting... Doesn't anybody learn anything these days...

@Hillsy_: don't worry, there is dual audio option. English Dub is for those that want to play with a language they understand. For those that want to play with the original JP VA will have the option to change the audio.

@Hillsy_:Some people like hearing the game in their own language rather than having to read subtitles. It's not that strange a concept. Plus it will have both Japanese and English so the player is free to choose.

The first Yakuza game was dubbed for US release. The rest were subtitled.

For those wondering if the JP voice are still there, don't worry, Sega has confirmed that the game will have dual audio option

I'm looking forward to it either way but I'm sad they changed the names. Judge Eyes was a cooler more interesting name in my opinion.

By the way, Judge Eyes (as it is known in Japan), will release this December 13th there already.

Still great to know it will have also a Western release!
