Yakuza creator bringing Binary Domain to Xbox 360, PS3

Squad-based shooter from Toshihiro Nagoshi in development for HD consoles, targeted at Japanese and Western markets.

Toshihiro Nagoshi is best known for his work on the Yakuza and Super Monkey Ball franchises, but the man is distancing himself from those properties for his next body of virtual work.

Today, Sega announced Binary Domain, a squad-based action game from the mind of Nagoshi. It is set in Tokyo in the year 2080, a time when humans are locked in battle with robots. The title is described by Nagoshi as a "dramatic and energetic sci-fi shooter." In the game, players take control of a peacekeeping team that, as it continues its fight against the robots, begins to ponder whether or not they are becoming robotic or robots are becoming human.

The streets are paved with robots in Binary Domain.
The streets are paved with robots in Binary Domain.

"When you hear sci-fi you may think of cold, clinical environments, but with Binary Domain I wanted to combine this with a deep human drama," Nagoshi said. "The keyword we have in mind for this project is 'Life'. I wanted to make something that will be accepted by both the Japanese and Western markets, and this fundamental theme is something everyone knows but which the full extent of can be difficult to grasp."

Sega did not provide a release window for Binary Domain. The game's first trailer was released today and is embedded below.

"Wake up foo!" I'm liking thegame's sense of humor already. Is this going to be a disc release or a downloadable title?

@anthonycg There are many reason to why people use windows over Mac/Linux and it has little to do with the name. Being a PC gamer basically forces you to use windows. Linux fragmentation has made it much harder on themselves as well. Mac's are very expensive. Like I said I know company names do help companies if they have a positive reputation. My point is it's not enough to guarantee success a quality product is equally important. It's this same attitude that had Sony struggling in this generation of console gaming. They thought since they were the top dog and considered the best that they could release there console when they wanted and for however much they wanted.

@method115 Doesn't matter really. The companies don't need you to believe anything. As long as you pay up you can think whatever you want. It's a simple business strategy to use your past reputation to get people to buy your products. It's why people buy Windows over Mac and vice versa. It's why more people use ipods than cowon mp3s. Do you truely believe that the majority of consumers are so tech savvy that they seriously weigh what product is best for them? If that were the case, advertisement wouldn't be as big as it is today. And we wouldn't be blindsided by 10 second commercials that don't even describe the products and have NOTHING to do with them at all. Old Spice commercials come to mind. How worthless those commercials would be if people demanded the facts! Most people use a product because it is all they know and they simply clutch on to them as if there is nothing else. It's why people don't move to Linux. For anything else to be true, the customers in question would have to have actually tried all of the possibilities and it's obvious that the average consumer does not do that at all. It's obvious that the average tv commercial will not move the informed customer. But that's not who they're after.

@anthonycg You can name as many games as you want just because there horrible games to you other people like them. Your not going to convince me that these games are selling well year after year simply because of the name EA.

Oh no, I hate to see so many developers wasting their time! With any luck, this will be better than Metro 2033 or Timeshift or whatever... but I'm not optimistic.

Highly intelligent robot warriors shooting and missing humans from within 6 feet. Yeah right. lol!! Trailer was not very good and voice acting was worse. The idea is sound, but the execution needs serious help. Like a bad version of IRobot. **************************************************************** @GameBeaten This is almost like a parody of what western gamers "like." --------------------------------------------------------------------------- That's exactly what I felt when I saw the trailer. It kind of reminded me of Brute Force, only a lot worse. They really need to take that back to the drawing boards.

For some reason The House Of The Dead came to mind while watching this trailer. Anyway, can one tell me, how in hecks name all the robots missed all the time? I mean, what's the point of being a robot, if you don't have Auto-Aim or something? :P

GameBeaten Posted Dec 2, 2010 1:37 am PT Let's read off the list: Stereotypical white action dude who is arrogant - Check. Stereotypical black action dude that talks with slang - Check. Stereotypical action chick that uses a handgun - Check. So true and I dont have much hope for this being a 'deep human drama' with such cliche characters.

@method115 How could you pick the only instance in which that happened in the history of EA since NFL Blitz was published in 1997? You completely ignored Madden, Live, FIFA, and NHL the biggest era of milking ever. And then there's COD, Dynasty Warriors, Guitar Hero(!), Mario Party, and even pacman has been abused to death. Lets not even go into the movie industry...

I saw the intro trailer for this on YouTube last night, it looks very cool and unique, the story and characters look interesting and the voice acting is cheesy but in a good way =P I think it might be a 3 player co-op game so that's nice, I look forward to seeing more of it.

Binary Domain seems like another 'Front Mission Evolved' at the first glance. Personally I've had enough of shooter games, there is no unique characteristic to distinguish one from the other. And the stories are all very short. If Binary Domain becomes an arcade shooter then maybe it will fare better. Also to give more variety other than Namco's Time Crisis/Razing Storm and Konami's (old) Warzaid.

Coach(l4d2) and his western stereotype friends killing/yelling at NS-5 robots(IRobot). well, they made Yakuza so I guess that they can make a cliché recipe like that turn out to be good. I'm buying it :P

I agree with Jackmac36 - this whole idea that you will appeal to an audience in another part of the world based on what you perceive to be wanted by those people... hello!? We're in a multicultural society these days [read: there are plenty of eastern gamers living in the west, and vice versa]... I just like the Super Meat Boy philosophy - bypass all that rubbish about presumptions, metrics and what you think people want, and just make a good game that you will want to play yourself. We want originality - not what designers are second guessing what they think we want.... anyone that builds a game that way is plainly in it purely for the money side. Money as a result of success is great and everything, but we want people who want to make a truly great game first, and have success second.

Would rather see proper gameplay instead of these waste-of-time video mockups that always bear little resemblance to the final game.

@anthonycg Yes I heard the same thing when I told everyone that UFC undisputed would easily outsell EA MMA. How did that work out? Like I said yes names help but the same people can't be buying the final fantasy major releases over the years and simply playing the game because it's final fantasy. Maybe they would do that for one or two titles but year after year I don't think so.

@Jackmac36 Agreed. I think they get confused over there because of the RPG market. In that area we differ greatly. Although it still boggles my mind the way FF13 can sell great while much better RPGs like Tales of Vesperia do poorly. I understand it's the name but year after year they do well so it just can't be the name. People would have stopped playing them by now if they didn't like the RPG setup. It just seems like anyone who played FF13 would say man that was a fun RPG I wonder if there are anymore games like this.

@Jackmac36 Japanese games tend to do horrible in western markets mostly due to a horrible lack of advertising but also because RPGs simply aren't popular here. Also, western protagonists are usually the macho variety while eastern protagonists tend to be rather androgynous teenage boys with father issues, tendencies of carrying rather large blades, numerous belts, and are always participating in cliched relationships with a female that happens to be their partner.
