Yakuza 7 Officially Revealed With Turn-Based Combat, A New Setting, And More

Yakuza 7 is on the way.

Sega has officially taken the wraps off the next Yakuza game--and it contains a major change for the action series. During a press conference today series creator Toshihiro Nagoshi unveiled the new game as Yakuza 7. It aims to be a "watershed" moment for the Yakuza series, Nagoshi said.

The game, which is set in Yokohama, features Ichiban Kasuga as the main character. Kasuga apparently is a big fan of Square Enix's Dragon Quest series, and Sega was able to work out a deal to be able to talk about the Dragon Quest franchise in Yakuza 7.

In a big change for the Yakuza series, it appears the combat now plays out in a turn-based system. You can see this in action in the video below. Interestingly, the developers, Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, released an April Fools video this year that joked that the Yakuza combat would change to turn-based. As it turns out, it really is.

Nagoshi said during the press conference that he hopes fans will welcome the change to the combat system, and if they don't, the developers will consider switching back with the next release.

Yakuza 7 will release on January 16, 2020 in Japan for PlayStation 4. The game will be released in the West later in 2020. You can check out the first trailer in the embed above.

The newly launched Yakuza 7 website contains numerous new images for the game. Click through the images in the gallery bellow to see them full size.

Should have made a spin off with that combat system not the main game. I preferred the Yakuza combat over this one. Leave this type of combat and game to Persona and you make Yakuza the way it was. Spin offs like these wont hurt and i would buy them but Yakuza 7 that is a bit downer but lets hope its good. Still getting it huge Yakuza fan.

At least I give it to them for having the gut to try out new things. It could end up badly, but it could also be something beautiful. The point is, you will never know unless you've tried. Unlike some other games I've known that pretty much stay the same for the last decade or so, like cod, halo, gears (apparently it's its official name now), etc...

Not to mention that the new combat kinda remind me of Valkyria Chronicle. Which is one of my favorite games. I would say that it has potential.

I love how Ryu Ga Gotoko studios keeps trying and experimenting with new and unique elements. Judgement was a step in a different direction and now Yakuza 7 sounds to be completely different from anything they've ever done before! I will welcome the new combat system and try it and anything else creative and unique the developers bring to the table. Gotta respect a team who goes away from their comfort zone in making a main-line series game. Hope it works out well for both them and us!!

With the amount of combat scenarios in Yakuza, the game played time just went from 80 hours to about 67,302 hours. Also, the combat system in Yakuza was awesome and shouldn't have been messed with.

@jsprunk: Exactly, which means that between having a pain in the ass combat system and an ok combat system, I'll go for the ok one. And turn based is not ok.

That demonstration of the combat system looks really bad. Really half assed, same as many other things they've tacked on to the series over time, purely because they needed to add something new.

And maybe adding a subtitle to the new series without Kiryu would be a good idea. It's not FF after all. They'll probably keep pumping out a new sequel every year again over the next several years, until they eventually end up at Yakuza 20+.

Turn-based combat?! I can't fault them for trying something new with a new story and character an all, but I'm not sure I like that change for Yakuza.

Looks cool. Change is good, the combat system was always a bit clunky IMO.

Menu/turn based combat...nope, no way, no thank you. Do not want! The combat in all the previous yakuzas is one of the things that always brought me back. If the old combat system isn't an option to enable in 7 then I'll just watch a LP.

My main turn-off about this series was the button-mashing fighting mechanics. I welcome this.

Very risky move. Yakuza games are driven by story and character development, but gameplay is a very strong pilar too.

They can bring new people with this, but they can also push away some of the old fans.

I like the ordinary Yakuza games but there are like 7 of them plus Judgement and that samurai spin off. So Yakuza 7 being turn based could be a fun change of pace.

With turn based JRPG combat, I'd be inclined to skip EVERY random fight I could. I hate turn based JRPG's.

It seems stilted in a way that would drag things out considerably and lose the immediacy and satisfaction of jump kicking a dude in the face. This may be the first Yakuza game I don't play.

This may garner enough new players that it will be the new standard.

I don't like this, at all. I hate turn-based RPG's. I'm a huge fan of the Yakuza series too. Oh well, guess I'll just skip this one.

This sounds awesome. I’m a huge fan of turn-based combat. I also like brawler combat, but I’ve never liked liked the combat in Yakuza for some reason. Can’t wait for this.

Cant say Im thrilled with the new gameplay. I liked the beat em up mechanics it was fun I dont want an rpg game. We have so many other franchises that offer rpg gameplay the yakuza series should not evolve into an rpg. Im sure itll make fans but as Ive played all the others Im not digging this change already. But I guess I can only hope that they improve on the story like Zero did. Y6 wasnt that great of a story and fell flat abit to me

I really enjoy the combat to Yakuza games. Using the Heat Actions, such as smashing someone's face into the wall or dropping a dude onto a rail, never gets old, so I am hesitant on this change. It'd be one thing if it was only turn-based for a minigame, but turning all the combat turn-based? I'm not too sure. But I love all the other games in this series, so I'll definitely still give it a shot. I still can't wait to try it out, regardless. Even if the combat is weird to get used to at first, I'm sure the story will be great.

So it’s basically a full fledged JRPG. I love it.

Half of the fun in Yakuza is the fighting, the arena... but with the change of the battle system... Can it be that good?
