XCOM Spin-Off Chimera Squad Announced, And It's Coming Very Soon

A budget-priced XCOM spin-offs makes some big changes to the strategy series formula.

A new XCOM spin-off is coming very soon from developer Firaxis Games, and it's landing at a budget price. The standalone game XCOM: Chimera Squad is coming as a digital-only Steam PC release on Friday, April 24. It will launch at $10, and then go up to its regular price of $20 on May 1.

In the announcement, 2K notes this isn't a full sequel or an XCOM 2 expansion, but it is set five years after the events of XCOM 2. Humans and aliens have been working together to rebuild, but some of Earth's human natives don't support the alliance. Chimera Squad is an inter-species task force built to investigate these threats, and each squad member has a distinct personality and abilities.

Now Playing: XCOM: Chimera Squad - The 6 Biggest Changes

The focus on squaddies with unique abilities, rather than randomized rolls, is a big departure for the previous XCOM games and expansions. 2K says this puts a focus on team composition and formulating complementary roles. The stages themselves are also discrete encounters, and you can plan your attack with a new Breach Mode that lets you select your entry points for attack. In another big change from the norm, the turn order for unit attacks is interleaved between your units and the enemy.

"With XCOM: Chimera Squad, we felt there were exciting gameplay opportunities yet to be discoveredwithin the XCOM universe," said lead designer Mark Nauta, in the announcement. "Gameplay like Breach Mode, interleaved turn order, and the introduction of agents as fully fleshed-out characters will revolutionize how the gameplays while still retaining the combat experience that makes the XCOM series so loved by gaming communities around the world."

I like the premise of it, has a Star Trek-y feel to it by universal brotherhood and whatnot but it looks cartoony compared to the previous games.

This sounds great! I would really prefer it on Xbox though. (Great pre-order offer though!)

Now this is preorder done right. 50% off if you prebuy the game. More publisher should do that. Itd be a nice incentive, rather than release it at full price. Most people will wait a few weeks and get it on sale anyways.

I already love the whole humans and aliens working together vibe! Signs that the industry is starting to break outside of the sci-fi stereotype mold.

Too bad it's on Steam only tho.

Feels like a scenario expansion to XCOM 2, but at $10 it’s a steal, I’m fine even if it’s only a couple hours long, I was craving for more

@MigGui: I hope it's longer than a couple of hours long, but yes, it looks very interesting so far. If it will be short we can always have mods to iron it out.

I tought it was going to be like The Bureau gameplay wise, but I'll bite anyway. It's funny, the Bureau helped me get into Xcom, and turn based is design choice I always questioned. Lesson is: if you gonna try something you don't like again to spice your library, go for the best of the best.

XCOM is great, but I'm not loving that art style at all.

Not too keen on the style or tone.

Fluffy smugness.

Hmmm. This is....interesting.

On one hand, more XCOM is a good thing.

On the other hand, why make it a budget title?

@mrbojangles25: Probably because it's meant to be a smaller spin off not a full big name release. More of a standalone expansion kind of deal.
