Publisher 2K has revealed XCOM 2, the sequel to its acclaimed turn-based tactical action game, which is set to ship on PC first in November.

According to 2K the sequel "transports players 20 years into the future, where humanity lost the war against the alien threat that has established a new world order."

"The secret paramilitary organization known as XCOM is largely forgotten, and must strike back to reclaim control of Earth and free mankind from the aliens’ rule."

Here's a story overview provided on the official XCOM 2 website:

"Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces and XCOM, the planet's last line of defence, was left decimated and scattered. Now the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda below and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.

"Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to rise from the ashes, expose the insidious truth behind the occupation, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all."

In the game, the XCOM is now the invading force and must manage dwindling resources while evading the alien threat in a new mobile headquarters.

"Players must use a combination of firepower and stealth-like tactics to help XCOM recruit soldiers and build a resistance network, while attempting to expose the evil alien agenda and save humanity."

2K is touting procedurally-generated levels, which it says "will make each experience unique to the player," along with a "deeper level of modding support." The game will also feature five updated soldier classes, increased soldier customisation, a variety of new alien and enemy types, evolved tactical combat, "and more."

XCOM: Enemy Unknown designer Jake Solomon returns for the sequel as creative director. According to Solomon, the feedback from players has had a big part to play in the development on XCOM 2.

"The feedback from the passionate XCOM community played an important role in the development of XCOM 2," he said.

"We're thrilled to implement long-time fan requested features such as procedural levels and modding support, as well as adding more of what makes XCOM great like new aliens, enemies and soldier classes."

Other noteworthy elements of XCOM 2 are the new Advent enemies that "offer a distinct tactical challenge".

Here's a feature list of XCOM 2 features:

  • XCOM On The Run: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM's mobile headquarters. Guide your strike force around the world, build popular support and expose the aliens' sinister plans.
  • Recruit Resistance Fighters: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree including new class abilities like Momentum, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
  • Tactical Guerrilla Combat: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. The state of the world affects each combat mission's environment. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artefacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
  • A New Breed Of Enemy: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the Advent, enforces of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
  • Research, Develop and Upgrade: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armour to fit your preferred tactics.
  • Each Mission is a Unique Challenge: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps missions, and goals.
  • Create Custom Mods: Community-focused tools allow you to create your own campaign, tactical gameplay, aliens, classes, strategy game features, and share within the Steam Workshop.
  • Engage in Head-to-Head Multiplayer: Mix-and-match squads of humans and aliens battle head-to-head on randomly-generated maps.

I'm excited for this as a TBS and XCom fan. However, damn I'm tired of aliens, monsters, mobs, etc always doing some form of howl. I mean come on.

Just hope we don't see this game follow all the others with the game reserve crap where you pay full price for a partial game! If they follow what they did last time with their expansions I'll be happy! EU was what all expansions should be like! You are given substantial content that provides drastic amounts of replayablility at a reduced price. They better not have Day 1 DLC!

Very excited! I wonder if this will be a follow-up to EU or EW (or if it's just a new standalone story). It's great to hear about the mod support as well, I'm sure this will aid in making this have a very long lifespan. I also hope they do not tone-down the game with the plan to port it to consoles or tablets, and go all-out on the PC, but at the same time I'm not going to hold my breath...

Nice to see from trailer that we seemingly have actual melee options now too. I guess this means that long war mod was typically more canon than playing and winning normal game! All you who got your asses kicked were playing it RIGHT!

@repulsive44552: I wouldn't say they were POS but last ones were dumbed down for sure... Still excellent games.

@repulsive44552: Does sound out of spite when you say "simplified piece of ****".

However I do agree that most turn-based strategy games are best for P.C. Chaos Reborn is proof of that.

Love how everyone thought getting the good ending in X-Com meant they won the war. You won against the first invasion...

PC "first". Good, so it should come to consoles then so the devs can actually make money.

@MAD_AI@prats93: Just wanna point out here steams is digital Xcom was the at retail location. Meaning buying online or digital not included. Also enemy within wasnt really a AAA release so looking at it's launch week against AAA's doesnt help. Enemy Within got XCOM back on the map for the series as a whole but also console users. This was evident when Bureau got alot of attention before release by console players and PC before it floped. A actual sequel to Enemy within would have garnered alot of support.

@PinchySkree: What "limitations". It's called streamlining to make the game lean and actually enjoyable. The first XCOM was a laborious, over complicated mess. Enemy Unknown surpassed it in every single way by focusing on the essence of turn-based strategy as opposed to stupid and tedious micro management. There's a reason why Advance Wars is considered the best turn-based strategy game of all time.

@prats93@PinchySkree: So limited fixed locations, complete lack of atmosphere, tiny maps, annoying voice acting, restricting weak auto class system, no custom inventory and aliens with the fear factor of the muppets improved the game?

The original was not overcomplicated at all, unless you are looking for a turn based ACTION game.

@prats93@PinchySkree: Advance Wars is among my favorite games, but to call it "best turn-based strategy game of all time" is going way too far

@prats93@PinchySkree: I don't know about Advance Wars, but I agree with you on XCOM; if Firaxis draws too much from the original games, it'll make XCOM II worse.

@Mogan@prats93@PinchySkree:

Eeeeeeh. Classic Xcom is great. There are a lot of cool things you can accomplish with the systems it allows-- that moment when a lone soldier opened a door and come face to face with three mutons, only for you to do an elaborate grenade-pass chain and blow them away, is both hugely satisfying and slightly hilarious. But they also are unrealistic-- then again, perfect realism isn't always good balance or design.

Personally, I have no issues with the class system. When I enabled randomized rookie stats/growths in second wave, it overcame basically my only issue with that. Even in classic Xcom, I would screen my rookies and assign them roles based on their stats-- roles that often lined up closely with the class system.

The only gripe of yours I actually agree with is the reaction-scramble. And that's confirmed as being gone in Xcom 2. So. Yeah. I'm sorry if your nitpicks made Enemy Unknown unenjoyable for you, but it was one of the solidest tactical strategy games I've played in a long time. Particularly with the refinements made by Long War + Enemy Within, it is probably my favorite strategy game ever, if not my favorite game, period.

Firaxis has a history of designing good, well-thought-out gameplay mechanics and systems, and I fully expect them to do the same here. If you want to look at it from the lens of loyalty to classic Xcom, or realism, or any other standard than "Is it fun?," then you will probably be disappointed. But I play games to have fun, and Jake Solomon and his team did a fantastic job last time of making mechanics that were FUN. Yeah, it needed mods and/or increased difficulty to really kick the replayability into high gear, but with the Second Wave randomizing options, even those flaws were largely mended.

tl;dr: It's possible you just don't like Firaxis' approach to game design. In which case, you are sad and I have no desire to speak to you further.

That looks awesome. Can't wait to play that. I'm just a little disappointed about the story line though. I think it would have been better to take the fight to the alien homeworld instead of leaving it on Earth.

Sounds like we're the invaders in this one. It's rare that a game makes you play as a terrorist.

But i won the war? And it was very easy on that note. Unfortunatly for the Aliens all my characters had quick save so they were up against 40 Tom cruises from Edge of Tommorrow

@Evil_Saluki: That may not be quite the same as cheating, but it's pretty close. To me saving constantly so my squad didn't lose anyone would take away a lot of the thrill.
